The Wairarapa Daily. SATURDAY, APRIL 29, 1882. THE PASTORAL SOCIETY.
The annual meeting of tho Pastoral Society was satisfactory inasmuch as it indicated that its financial position was an improving one, and that' it had so far overcome the difficulties which onco threatened it as to have a credit instead of a debit balance at the bank. This is the result of good management, and the interest displayed in the welfare of the. Society by an efficient Committee and a ''capable secretary. At the same tjme it must bo admitted that an annual Income-of less than five hundred pounds-from all sources is not an adequate representation of - the I wealth and progress of a large fertile pastoral and agricultural district like the Wairarapa, containing a population of ten thousand souls. Some years ago when the existence of the Society hung in the balance, an officer representing it canvassed the district with a success that decided its then Committee to persevere in their undertaking. A second canvass of a similar character would we feel assured, now result in a substantial and permanent addition to its annual income, It would be idle to deny that certain local prejudices arising out of past differences still militate against the Society. Taking a broad view of the Society as the admitted exponent of the agricultural and pastoral progress of this district, wo feci that it is the duty of. settlors one and all to as far as possible, lend it a helping hand, and to assist in giving the Wairarapa, through it, in all parts of the colony a good name for stock and produce.
