WAIRARAPA JOCKEY CLUB.
Present—Messrs H, S. Wardell (in tho chair), J, C, Vallanoe, N. Grace, \V, 0. Williams, B. Kimberley, G. Beetham, W. C, Buohanan, J, Barrow,' H, MoMaster, J, Snodgrass, and R, R. Armstrong.
Tho minutes of the last general meet • ing were read and con firmed, The annual balance sheet was read and adopted on the motion of Mr Beer tlmm, seconded by Mr MoMaster after a few remarks onono or two of the items,
The Stewards report was then read and fully debated being ultimately adopted, It was resolved that a Spring meeting be hold on the 9th November next, and that the Pastoral Society be requested to hold their annual show as near to that day as they conveniently could. The Secretary produced a photograph of the tot'alisator, and stated the club had a license for two. After a tew remarks as the profit,likely to accrue from possessing one, the price and size, it was resolved that it is desirable to purchase a totalisator for the use of tho club, and that the Steward's be onipowered to obtain one at a coat not exceeding £6O 01' 170.
Ten new members were ballotted for and elected,
A letter was read from the Secretary of the Hawke's Bay Club, disqualifying Phillip John Murtagh, for various offences specified, from eyer. racing or riding oil that course.—The disqualification was confirmed so far as this Club is concerned.
A letter was read from the manager of the Telegraph Department, notifying that the Club could not have the use of the wires this year to the course, as it did not pay, The Chairman stated that the trustees had laid the wire to tho course, provided tho oflii'e and instrument, at their own. cost, on an agreement that the Govern, inont should provide an operator on thu day of the races, After some discussion the matter was left in the hands of the members of the district (Messrs Beyth un and Buclnnan) to deal with.
A resolution was carried that horses running or entered in (he same year for big races elsowhere should not be eligible to run in hack races here. The secretary pointed out that a horso might ran at Napier or Wangauui f.r a Maiden Plate or Champagne Stakes and then come and run hero as a hack unless some such rule were in existence, The following officers were then elected for the ensuing year Yioe-Preaident, H. S. Wardell; Committee, Messrs N. Grace, fl. McMaster, J. C. Vallance, B. Kimberley, Jas. Macaw, P, F. Tailored and W, 0. Bidwill ; 'Judge, Mr Wallace Smith ; Clerk of Scales, Mr Donald Donald; Timekeeper, Mr W. 0. Williams; Clerk of the Course, Mr W, lorns, assistant, Mr Charles Ticelmrst; Starter, Mr H, McMastor; Auditors, Messrs Boys and Snodgrass The handicapping was left to the stewards or to suoh persons as they might appoint, The chairman thou at some length went into the history of the course being vested in the Trustees,, and the loan subsequently raised, and as a Trustee had to call on the Club for payment of the Bum of i!4O for the nse of the course for this year, that being the amount ofinterest due. The Trustees only charged what was absolutely necessary, but through the repairs done their funds were exhausted and thev had no other means of raising the amount required and the interest had become due on the first of the present month. The ground was now leased at £l6 per annum but that lease expired at the end of the next year, and after that it could be let at a far higher; rate. He could himself obtain for it now. He thought in order to bring the Trustees and the Club into closer, connexion it would be desirable to elect the former life members of the Club. , • A very full debate then took place as .( to the sum expended by the Club and the . | Trustees and the buildings put on the ground, but ultimately it was resolved that the Club pay the Trustees the sum of £4O tor the use of the course for the vear 1882.' '
A telegram was read from Mr ?, 1?. Tancred, suggesting that the salary of the secretary be raised and his services be re, cognised by a gratuity, Mr R. R, Armstrong withdrew. : The chairman in bringing this matter forward felt he was justified in making a few remarks. He had had.ample opporjudging, and he could give an' unqualified assertion that they oould not have made a more fortunate choice for the post. No one could be more careful and, painstaking, while the technical knowledge he possessed was o( great advantage, They had a good offldqraht} lie was fairly entitled lo their thanks for the way in which he had discharged his, duties. It was for them to deoide whether this should take the form of a resolution or be of a more tangible nature.
The opinion expressed by tho chairman Wttß endorsed by every membor present, and it was ultimately vesolvod that tho salary of the secretary bo raised to £4O for the current year, and that the YicoPresident tender to him the thanks of tho Club far the attentive and effective services h« had rendered. Mr Armstrong having resumed his scat tho Vice-President said he had been requested to convey lo him thn thanks of the Club for the manner in winch lie hud discharged his duties. Had tho finances of the Club been in a more flourishing state they would have liked to have shown this iu a more tangible manner. As it was ho gave him the assurance on behalf of tho Club of their hearty appreciation of his services. They had decided to laiso his salary tb £4O per annum, and hereafter IrustMto bo able to increase it. Mr returned thanks in a few appropriate words; and a vote of thanks to the clmir and a notice of motion for tho next meeting to make tho Trustees hfo members of tho Club brought the business to a close about a quarter lo nine.
