WINTER ENTERTAINMENT.

Tho second of St. Matthew's Church winter entertainments was held last evening and was a decided success, there being a largo and appreciative audience. The first item 011 the programme was an overture by the Masterton String Band, but they failed to put in an appearance, being tho second time tliey had disappointed the promoters of the entertainments. The glee" All amunsgt tho liarley." Wfl3 given by the choir with spirit and in good time. Then followed a song " Three Sailors Hoys," by Mr Maxtnn. Mrs Warren gave " J'mnny New Moon," which was vociferously encored, lo which tho lady responded by sinning that pretty song entitled "Wings." Misses .lupp and Lowes gave a pianoforte duet for which they received an encore. A song "Far away was then given by Mis J. J. Freeth, Major Smith following with the " Gauntlet," in his usual spirited style.Mr Dah'jniplo gave a reailini! "Hints to wives; how to manage their husbands," Mr Bisli sang tho "Vagabond," receiving an encore, to which he responded with "SweetMadoline." Misses Jupp and Lowes being again called upon by the chairman (RevMr Paige), sang a duet "The Lily and the Eose," which was nicely rendered, the voices harmonising perfectly. Mr Eapp followed with the "Tar's Farewell," narrowly escaping an encore. Misses McKay and Anderson played a favorite duet on the piano, receiving hearty applause. " Stiil I love thee,"' was then executed by Mr Lyons/, Mr Grundy following with a very successful reading, " The ono legged goose." The son;; of the evening was given by Mr Gant, " The death of Nelson," to which was added as an encore "When other lips," which again brought down the house. The new piano which was used for tile first time last evening is one of lioellmg and Spangenbtirg's, and is a trichord throughout. It was greatly admired, and it is to be hoped the Committee will b9 enabled to pay off the debt they have incurred by securing such a good instrument.
