FROZEN MEAT COMPANY.
The following letter, on a subject of great interest to settlers in this part of the country, has.been kindly handed to the Wanganui Chronicle by Mr Peat for publication '.- 1 - Tupurupuru, March 27,1882. Meeting Mr Dalrymple in Wellington last week, I was much surprised at the misapprehension which he told me existed in the Wanganui district as to offers of stock invited from Wairarapa settlers for the ship Mataura, recently arrived in Lyttelton. It seems to have been thonght there was an intention to exclude Wanganui from an equal chance of shipping stook. lam ready to admit any error of judgment there may, have been on my part, but as to any idea of unfairness I am sure yon will absolve me from that when I explain the circumstances. I went to Dunedin in January, mainly to see the freezing process on board the Dunedin, and I very soon ascertained that both Christchurch and Dunedin stockowners were making evory effort to obtain the promise of the Mataura, which has since arrived in Lyttelton. The manager of the shipping company (Mr Coster) gave me very plainly to understand that unless I made him an early and definite offer to fill the ship that Wellington would have little chance, and not feeling justified in committing the company without first getting definite promises of stock, I hurried back to Wairarapa, and went to a lot of trouble in getting the necessary circulars sent at once, Sending them up the Weßt • Conßt involved a delay that would only have rieedjessly risked any chance wo had of petting the ship. As I immediately afterwards wrote to Mr Dalrymple, the cpular was simply a provisional one, to be followed (in the event of our getting the ship) by one covering the whole of the provincial district, and the applications under which to bo, course, allotted by, a meeting of the directors, I am very sorry that, while . simply anxious to do my best for all concerned, it has been my misfortune to be altogether miß- ' understood, When I undertake anything Inever spare time or trouble, but I must say it-is not very encouraging to find one's fairness questioned. To Bhow the yroundlotsneßs of the whole thing I may mention that I was the only one of the directors who proposed sending 'any stock, both Mr Beetham and Mr Pharazyn being averse to applying for the Mataura, I hope you will make the facts as I have written them aR widely known as possible, and that, instead of a jealousy and mistrust that cannot possibly . do any good, we shall find both districts working together in a matter which bo much concerns them both. You will have seen by the papers that machinery for shore freezing works has been or- , dered, and we hope to see it at work by the beginning of January next. The season here has been - a very fine one for prass, and sheep especially are selling high, as I also notice they are with you, Cattle are decidedly dull, and no prospect of any improvement.—Yours, &c, W. C, BCCHANAK."
