The Wairarapa Daily. THURSDAY, APRIL 13, 1882.
We learn that it is the opinion of those who aie best able to form an opinion of the outcome of the present political crisis, that Sir George Grey will not be asked to form a Ministry. There is some .coniforj; in an assurance of tkis kind, though assuming that Sir Ajithpr Gordon has already made one false step, there is no absolute guarantee that it will not be followed by others. Faust when ho called for Mepristopheles, hardly anticipated the consequonces of- his rash action, An attempt has.been made-to show that, the present position of affairs has been precipitated by internal dissension in the Cabinet. We have good reason to bolieve that this is not the case, and that Mr Hail's ill-health was the immediate and sole cause of the resignajSipfiofhis Cabinet. We believe that the Hail Ministry possesses the confidence of the country, but oven if tin's point were doubtful, the feeling of members on both sides of the House, who are gentlemen as well as politicians, would be one of sympathy with the' painful position in which, the Premier of the - Colony is placed, with a desire to relievo, him of all official anxieties. : -We,'- must emphatically condemn Sir Arthur Gordon for not sharing in such a sentiment, Sending for. the Premier's ••bite enemy—Sir George Grey—and refusing to'listen to the last advice which Mr Hall was justified-in'offering, was striking a cruel blow at a- man))vostrated by sickness, and was insulting in his person the whole Colony. The action of Sir Arthur Gordon, unless explained by facts not yet brought to light, has very much the appearance of a vendetta. The _ Governor of New Zealand has been described as a mere shadow, an umbra, but it has repined for Sir Arthur Gordon to show that he is a person who can set at defiance Parliamentary Government, and establish an irresponsible and autocratio rule foreign to the constitutional experiences of free colonies.
