WHAREAMA.
[FROM OUR O'V.w fiORRESPONDET.J , Several very cold days were experienced here last week, but now the weather is all that could be desired. Feed is very plentiful throughout the district and stock are looking well in conseq'ienoe. ■ ■■■■'
The Tenui School Oommitteo met ou Friday last, and in response to a letter from the Masterton Committee agreed to support Mr W. 0. Buchanan's candidature for the seat on the Education Board vacant through the resignation of Mr Pharazyn, Repairs to the school building were authorised to be made as soon as possible. After tho ordinary business of the Committee was disposed of, a discussion took place with regard to giving prizes to the children, and also getting up sports and a tea party, It was resolved to canvass the district for subscriptions and that tho prizes be presented and the sports and ton party take place on Wednesday, April 12th. During the last month the attondanco at the school has increased to nearly double, It is evident that tho' stvingont enforcement of the compulsory clauses of the Education Act is bearing.some fruit,. There is a proposal to alter tho school holidays, by giving the longest term in the winter in lieu of in tho summer. lam informed that this question will be brought under the notice of persons interested at.mi early date, Tho Rev Mr Paigo held divine service at Tenui on Sunday to a large congregation. He is now making a tour of the district with the object of obtaining subscriptions towards a clergyman, who it is proposed to locate in this neighborhood, A sum of from .£l5O to £2OO will bo required, and it ought to be within the power of tho inhabitants to contribute this amount,
Our roads are now in very good condition, Tho traffic, howover, between Wlmkataki. and Oastlepoint is impeded considerably in consequence of the sand having been blown otf the rocks on the beach, leaving them bare and rugged. The first heavy sea will doubtless remedy this.
Mr Gillard, who has several metalling contracts, ia making very slow progress with them. It is to be desired that the Highway Board should urge on Mr Gillard to make more rapid process, in order that the work may be completed before winter sets in.
Mr Simpson, of the Marine Hotel, Whakataki, is about to leave the district. During his residenco hero he has done a great deal towards promoting cricket, racing, &c, especially having devoted a great deal of his time to the former. The Easter races, to be held at Whakataki on the 10th of April, will, it is considered, be a success. Considerable pains are being taken to make the course a good one. Now that the Mungapakeha and Blairlogie roads are formed and open for traffic, and numbers of persons and stock travel them, it would be a great boon to the public, if some euterprising individual would, make arrangements with Mr Vallance with a view to keeping an accommodation house at, the junction of these roads, as at present the stage is much too lorn; from Taueru to Tenui without a halting place,
