The Wairarapa Daily. THURSDAY, MARCH 30, 1882.
There is' one secluded spot in the Wairarapa which promises at some no very distant date' to become an important centre of population, We allude to Castlepoint, a watering place in this district, ' and the- sanatorium of the southern portion of the North Island. Castlepoint presents, perhaps, a greater number of .attractions to visitors than any other sea-side locality in NewZealand. In summer the heat'is tempered by sea breezes, and iiwinter 1 the chilling frosts with which inlandsettlers are so familial' are unknown.- -It. possesses an unlimited area of fine hard sandy beach, and' its resources in the way of seaweeds, shells and rocks would bo adequate to set up in business a score.of English marine resorts, It is admirably adapted' for boating- arid fishing, l and an unique inner basin furnishes perfectly secure andagreeable quarter/!.,for, bathers. •', Its weird stalactite.Gaverns, ;too, are "objects of intereslj which can scarcely .be.realjsed ;withon| a'personal visit, , Iripsfsfc years' the principle obstacle?, which have .pre:, ventedjCastjepoinVtattg iipite posiT 'ifon as a^'.fsivorif e „ and . watering plfe' .lipuse 'for visitor. a*d tho-'difficiiltj;: of icceis $' • . .';■■ '-jM.*)i& ,w*.''■%■■''''*-Vo>'--W<>'
it by the ordinary roads, Year by year, howovor, these drawbacks are yielding to private and public enterprise, and this season there has been a steady influx of Visitors there from both Wellington and Wairarapa, Mr Bogbrs has solved the difficulty of accommodation by establishing a commodious hotel, which he specially devotes to the comfort of families visiting the neighborhood. Wheto he first completed the Club Hotel his friends thought that he had built on too. ambitions a scale, but already he finds that an increasing flow of visitors will oblige him to enlarge it. This house is as efficient and as well conducted as a first-class hotel in Wellington, and is a great convenience to all who seek health and recreation at Castlepoiut, i Tho road from Masterton to the Castle is still a long and weary one, though lass so than it formerly was, and with a little additional enterprise it may yet be made a much easier journey. Cobb ife Oo.'s coach now takes nine hours for the trip, giving one hour for dinner at the comfortable Tenui Hostelry, but within a year or two with the improvements that are being made and contemplated the time may be reduced to about six hours. The Highway Board is now metalling some of the worst portions of the road, and if" the County takes up as it should do the bridging of tho Mungapakeha Creek and the formation of a line that has been surveyed, to avoid the heavy and uncertain heach track, the road, which is now tedious in line weather and impracticable in bad weather, will become good all the year round. It would be a great advantage too if tho proprietor of the Castlepoint station were to lay off a township in allotments to meet the demand which already exists for building sites, With united action on the part of the County, the Highway Board, and the private individual who owns the land the progress of Castlepoint would be extremely rapid. This locality is one that is well worth opening up by a good road, as it will in time attract a continuous stream of visitors from all parts of the Wellington provincial district, and bring population, trade and money into the Wairarapa, which will more than compensate for the comparatively small outlay required to improve the existing road.
