The Wairarapa Daily. FRIDAY, MARCH 17, 1882.

Our contemporary the Standard writing re the vacant seafc<at the Education Board says, " We 'snail have, or certainly ought to have, only Wairarapa men to choose from, and the Committees will therefore, have to examine well into the qualifications of the four candidates whose names are before them," and urges tlie claims of Mr Coleman Phillips or Mr Cox for the appointment, If there were any guarantee that no Wellington candidates would come forward for the existing vacancy wc might follow the line taken by our contemporary and balance the respective merits of our probable local candidates. The only reason, however, that we have for as Burning that .there will be no competitors for the seat in Wellington is the very weak one that there " ought not to be." _ We know as a-foct that that there will be one or more nominations from the Empire City, Archdeacon Stock being already in the field, and with this consideration before ns it is evident that if several candidates are brought forward in this district and the votes of local Committees split, a Wellington candidate will oust the Wairarapa of its fair share of representation at the Board Under these circumstances the /Wairarapa School Committees should pull together to return the candidate who is likely to poll the largest number of votes. We have ample proof that this candidate is Mr Buchakak, and it would be far better for the district to make sure of him rather than risk the transfer of the representation to Wellington. We should he happy to see either Messrs Phillips, Booth, or Cox elected to the Board, but wo have no wish to see them set up as candidates simply to be knocked down again. The system of electing members for the Board is a very partial and unsatisfactory one. The .Wellington Schools can easily combino together for any i particular candidate they may. favor, but in the Wairarapa it is more difficult to obtain united action. It might be desirable for the chairman of. the vario'us'School Committees' in tin's district to meet, together foe the-purpose of taking concerted action, not' only witlwespect to the present election, bnt also to Becure future''ob'es.V.'.Oiir wish' is not. to favor any one cjuididate.'.more. san'another,'but simplfto'make 1 ceW iain that some; one candidate from this district, be'returned'. The list of< nominations will soon -.show' ;what course of actions : \\ve tnißt.foV.once in;a way the ' Schoolswilii(Votc together/" We r niu|t; confess that we are surprised at thV.line' taken by our Greytown contemporary in putting fomiard Mr Coleman Phillips when it is obvious thathis'charie'e of election is nil, and we arestill more surprised that Mr Coleman Phillips should come forward wlieiii the'iiul of his doing so. will be .to deprive the : Wairarapa of a seat, to which it is entitled, and give it to "Wellington, which already possesses more than its fair share of representation. The representation at the Board is now as follows: Wairarapa 19 Schools. 2 Members, Country Districts 16 1 „ Wellington City 8 „ 4• „

After the present election is over, we anticipate that the, total.for'Wellington city will be five members out of eight, thanks to the Wairarapa Standard and Mr Coleman Phillips,
