GREYTOWN BUTTER AND CHEESE FACTORY.

FORMATION OF THE COMPANY,

A weli, altondod meeting of persons interested in tlie establishment of a Butter and Cheese Factory in Groytown was held on Tuesday evening in Messrs F, H, Wood & Co.'s Miction rooms, Mr Coleman Phillips being voted to the Chair. Tho minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Messrs 'Buchanan and Mod informed ho meeting that they had issued printed forms to the settlors around the district in the hope that they would have been able to lay before the meeting- the number of cows and quantity of milk that would be at the disposal of tho Company. The majority of forms had not been filled'in. and returned, and a number of the dairy, farmers desired to know moro about the working of tho proposed Factory before making any promises. : Mr Buchanan said he had given the subject a deal of attention, and regretted that there was so little information of thecharacter required before the meeting It to first necessary to get the information as to the quantity of milk the Company icould depend upon, and thought that ..unless tho settlers of Groytown took the matter up there was not much chance of success. If the necessary promiso of so many gallons of milk could be secured, they could act accordingly. ■ Tho Chairman said that ho hoped they would settle that cvoning whether there should be a factory erected or not. He thought that the settlers were holding ' back till a start was mado, and he believed , that if a suitable factory was erected thero wpuld be no difficulty in gotting a good ! milk supply, '

Mr Buchanan suggested that thoso settlers present should say how mnoh thoy would bo able to supply, and then they could form some idea as to what they could expect,

Mr Wolch said that although Messrs Gilpin and Pardon were payino %d a gallon for milk, he did not think the Company could afford to gire that price, for there was a great differonce in cheese and; butter making. He also thought a storekeeper could work it at a greater profit than a Company. \ A general discussion then took place in which Messrs Haines, W. ,ind H. Udy, C J. Hollard, Welch, Collin, and Judd took part, most of thom agreeing to increase the number of cows on their farms if the Factory wbb built.

Upon reckoning the number of promises, it was found that 189 cows, or 340 gallons of milk per day, could be relied

The Chairman said he believed that within a radius of three miles of Greytown they would got 300 cows, if the Factory was established,

Tins appeared to be the general opinion of those present, and the offers of support from them was found to be most encouraging, ■
