The Wairarapa Daily. MONDAY, MARCH 6, 1882.
It is, we understand definitely arranged | that Sir Ar-hur Gordon is, by his j own! deshe, to leave New Zealand. H«! may remain with us a. .few months longer, inrJeed.it is pretty certain that' he will not say a grim good bye till the close of the coming session but the. link which binds him to the colony is virtually severed and his further 'stay is merely to fulfil engagements to which'he canjrojk very well- depute to '• : ' Jfemany parteof the colony, and more, especially!in"Wellington, the'loss of! His Excellency is; contemplati'd'with complacency and nowlier? do' we find any great amount, of sorrow exhibited at bis projected departure. Yet Sre Artmjr is one of the ablest, most' accomplished, high principled nnd industrious representative of her Majesty that we have ever had. Contrasted with Si-it George Q .ttY for example, he is, as it were a gold guinea to a copper farthing. His ways, however, : are not our ways and the liKin to suit New Zealand is nof the high principled/son of an illustrious English statesman. What we require is a shoddy Governor, for are we not in our .principal centres of population a shoddy people?' We know exactly the man who will ; suit us. We like our Governor to be a man of rank, we love a marquis and would adore a Duke but all this iB nothing worth, unless he be affable to the leading citizens of the Empire City. A Duke who would treat our Bhoddy leaders of society as if they-were noble lords and titled ladies is just, about our. mark. A •Udtiuh nobleman who is incapable - of .heing,. bored, who will frisk - about a ball room or shine at a dinner table wuTsatisfy Wellington. His complaisantdeportment is of more importance than bia intelligence or ability and an'afltalkis of greater value in him than/ Ijqoae"government will nohp&TOtsta a ijttod fii* lijte $* Artliur (r«ii«i
upon us, in the blue blood circles iu England, there are plenty of persons , who .are 'fitted to ' become shoddy kings, and the Colonial' Secre-' tary should find no difficulty infilling Sir Arthur Gordon's place, If Buck a man as John Bright or even Gladstone were sent out to lis we should after thenovelty of the idea had worn off; get very sick of him and long for a tinsel duke in his stead.
