Aman named Joseph Smith was cutting a belt last Friday when his knife slipped and inflicted a wound in his leg, Mortification set in on Sunday, and Smith died last evening. The Goverwment have decided to appoint a Royal Commission to consider the present organisation of militia and volunteer force of New Zealand, and make suggestions as to re-organisation, The Commissioners will also revise existing regulations of the force. The Commissioners are Major-General Davidsou (Nelson), Major Pitt (Nelson), Major Hamlin (Waiuku), Major Lean (Christchurch), Capt. Crowe (Wellington). Patea, this day. The criminal libel action brought by Mr Sherwood against the Patea News was dismissed this morning without defence being called for. The magistrate condemned such actions being brought where there was a remedy by civil law.
