A Woodville settler named O'Neill Thompson has been committed for trial on a charge of dreadfully mutilating with an axe a bull, owned by his neighbor, a widow. The cause of the act seems to have been revenge, A man named Lawrence, of some education and good address, is in custody on charges of obtaining money under false pretences, and practising as a medical man, he not being qualified, Archibald McLean has imported from England six mares, specially adapted to improve the breed of hacks and produce weight-carriers. A movement is on foot to obtaip a second steam fire engine for Napier. Tl}e public ljaye subscribed liberally, but they want the Borough Council and'insurance companies to do likewise. Lnvercargill, Feb. 16.
A precocious youth was brought before the Court to-day. His nrnne was Angus Muir, his age 14, and he was charged with having, at Edendale, assaulted a respectable iparried woman with intent to commit rape, and tl|e evidence disclosed that when lie failed to accomplish his ends he commenced sharpening his pocket knife, and threatened'tq cut the woman's throat. He wi}B comrnUted for trial at the Supreme Court.
