MASTERTON SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
A meeting of the Mastertou School Committee was held last evening. Preaent— Messrß Bdddington fohairman), Caselberg, Heron, Hogg, Jago and Payton. The minutes of. the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The: Treasurer (Mr Sellar), reported that I the .'credit balance of the school treat acoountiwas £6 15s 4d, and of the ordinary aocount £lllos 3d. A;:lette'rwas read from Mr. Marshall asking for the support of the Committee to the appointment of his daughter as a pupil teacher. The following resolution on the question of pupil teachers was carried on the motion of Mr Payton seconded by Mr Jago, " That the Education Board be informed'tfiaithe weekly average attendance of-the'school is now 390, which entitles the sohool to an assistant teacher as well (is twbpupil teachers, The Committee believe that this attendance can be increased as no pressure has as yet been brought to bear on it through the compulsory., clauses of the Act, If the Education 1 Board admit the claim of the school to an. assistant teacher, the Committee approve the appointment of Miss Marshall and Miss Munro' as pupil teachersi". "■■■ Letter's were read from the Education Board, requesting the Committee to vote for three members for the Board; from the Featherston School Committee, asking the Committee to support the candidature of Messes Thomas Mason, and J. 6. Cox; and.from Mr lidbitter asking for support/' ... • •■■..•' The Committee, after discussion, agreed to vote for Mr W. C. Buchanan, Mr W. Booth and: the Rev. J. Paterson. The Bftdtmaster's monthly report was read, which reported taking possession of the new .building on the 6th inst., that the average attendance for the past week was 390, the previous average attendance having been 335. He applied for a cupboard for school stationery, and brought under the notice of the Committee the question of supplying books to the children,
Theoupboard was. ordered to be placed in't the'corridor in accordance with the suggestion of the Head-mastor.; Mr Paytbn pointed out that the liduoition Board had .laid down a scale of
prides;at whjohjbodks should be charged to - the 'ohiidreb. The scale was so low that teaohers in the country had to give up supplying the children, and the result was that pupils had, in consequence of the regulations of the Board, to pay higher instead of : lower prices_for their supplies. ; '"'' . M.r.Hogg;.wfflol,Tho opinion that the ComnJitteT should make provision for tie children obtaining books at the prices named.by the Board.; , ; The chairman pointed out that the Committee had no funds for the purchase of book. :■
A sub-committee consisting of Messrs Boddington,'iHbgg and Payton was appointed to report on this question to tho next The following accounts were passed for payment J—S; Shepherd, £1; Mrs Bradley, L 3 ss; M, Caselberg k Co., lCs lid; Smith & Hogg, £1 lis; G. M. Wood, 103; Ed.-Joneß,Bs; J. Payton & Co,, LI lis; and T. Hall, 9s. ..On; tho.motion of .Mr Payton, seconded by Mr,Jagb,'.thß following: resolution was 'carried unanimously;"— That the Masterton . school Committee would be glad to learn the reftspn 'why Drill Instructor Bezar is .to bo removed from Maßterton where there are three corps established, to Featherston where there are none, as tho Bchool committee relying on the cooperation,of the drill instructor have recently assisted, to. form a cadet corps, which liq? numbers 62 members, and that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Major .Bunny, the officer commanding the district, to the members for the district, and to tho Hon. the Defence Minister,
Messrs Feist and Heron were appointed visiting members for the ensuing month. The meeting then adjourned.
