A STRANGE DISCOVERY.
A good many years ago (observes an Auckland journal) two Europeans were travelling in the Kawhia district, and when passing below one of the limestone cliffs that abound in.that country, they were attracted by. the behaviour of their doe, which entered one of the caves,' barking furiously..; Tho men climbed up the face of the cliff, and entered the cave, and to their surprise found five human figures sitting in a cirole, evidently prS served by some process, ■ They are not Maoris, they are not sitting as Maoris sit, the Natives have no tradition respecting them, and they say they must have belonged to a people who were here before the arrival of the* Natives from Haiwaiki. The subject is a mysterious one, and is well worth the attention ef those who study our antiquities. (The bodies have not been preserved bp&e limestone, but by some process applied by"' human beings, The 'cave where they were found was never a place .of sepulchre for the Maoris.
