THE ANNUAL RAM AND EWE FAIR.

..———♦ -■ ■' The annual Earn and Ewe Fair, under the auspices of the Wairarapa and East Coast Pastoral and Agricultural Society, was held at the show grounds, Carterton, yesterday, and was an undoubted success, Buyers and sellers and the general publio began to assemble shortly after ten o'olook and during the day there must hare been but little short of 500 people gathered on the ground from all parts of the district, At midday, Mr Wood having won the toss for first start, opened the sale with Mr W, J. Nix's pure bred Romney Marsh rams, and subsequently he and Mr lorns alternated in the rostrum every half hour, Bidding might have been a little brisker but atill there were plenty of buyers on the ground, and exhibitors generally seemed quite satisfied, with the prices realised. A speciality of the day were MrD, Molester's pedigree bulls, which were brought on to the ground in splendid order, ready haltered to be removed by rail or hand, and were a good looking lot all round, Partisan, a strong well built rioh red calf, being immensely admired, and causing sharp competition, being' ultimately sold right out to Mr McMaster at forty-seven guineas. The pure bred cows were all passed in as the reserve was not reached, but nine out of the eleven bulls changed hands. A good deal of dissatisfaction was expressed at a charge being made for the Society's printed catalogue of entrieß, arid we really think for all that was purohased they might have been given away, as those sold could certainly hardly have paid for the printing. The catalogues of Mr D. McMaster's were distributed free and mußt certainly have cost more. The day waß fine throughout, with tho exception of a shower or two in the latter part of the afternoon, but though the business was pnshed along pretty quickly, and but little time lost, unnecessarily, it was past six o'clock before the last lot was disposed of. We append the prices realised and the names of the purchasers: - . Messrs Joseph and Phillips' Cotswold ramß.and those of Mr P. F. Tancred, comprising prize-takers at recent Bhows, which were passed in during the auction, were subsequently sold at satisfactory ■ prices privately.
