The Wairarapa Daily. FRIDAY FEBRUARY 10, 1882.

The following paragraph we extract from the Qtago Wifness of January 28th:- •/;.' ' "A most and unwelcome announcement js made by the Timara Herald, It js 'that the much-dreaded fly has appeared amongst Mr Archer's sheep in his paddock near fimaru, The Herald says:—This is the firat time, we believe, the insect has beeri'disoovered in a New Zealand flock, at all even's in South Canterbury. It is bad enough when the destructive worm i'b found to exist amongst small flocks, where sheep are reckoned by units, for under such conditions its eradication may possibly bo effected, But should the insect once get amongst the large flocks pasturing on the hills, and on the forge runs, its presence I with them .would indeed be a dread calamity to sheepmastcrs. We devoutly hope that the pnwent case is an isolated '<jne;'&d that we shall not hear of its multiplication." We may state that a rqnholder in the Valley, in December last, found a great many of his lambs maggotty, and some 60 far gone that they died. The shepherds .agreed, amongst themselves, that the. common Wpw-fly had struck the lambs after docking, hence the maggots. But one of the oldest runholders in the Valley lias also stated bis belief that' he had seen the fly, which is a different sort of fly to the common blow-fly, and ■ well-described in. the small Sheep Act handbook,'issued,by .the Government, j Now, it is well to warn sheepfarmers of these rumors, and facts, for if the | sheep-fly really gets amongst the flocks, it will bo jam than itjje'. scab. Insect and animal life spreads very rapidly .in this colony, in consequence of the favorable climate, ,The Government, ijfthe "shepherd" handbook, plainly states " that the sheep hot is amongst üb." No attention should therefore be paid to the remarks of shepjjerds, but all maggoty sheep treated as having been struck by the sheep bofc. The wool should all bo carefully clipped, the! maggots cleaned away and crushed; and tar applied. '' The sheep' .bot ..is. of : a dirty ash: ov ; grey polltf, "the face ochreous, eyes bj'ownj body silvery,,, spotted with black, having : the : large; whit#scab at the base; the abdomen is ' marked. with' yellowish and''! white flecko, and is! baity atthe ends j % legs are ochreons," fiie • fly Jepflsits its eggs in the nostrils of sheep,'.and"! Yuattdescribesthe terror ofitheflocki at the appearance of the pest—" They gather together with their heads in the centre, and their pples .buried in the soil, if they oari find #ny, and are;in; continual motion,-stamping with their! feet and snorting in order to guard their noses against the assault, of their pussy enemy; then, perhaps, one of them who is more specially attaoked will burst from his companions'and gallop wrsß the field, looking fearfully behind him at every s.tep."—Prevention., •is always better than cure, W& advise 1 Bueepfftrmers to look into the matter, :
