The Wairarapa Daily. SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 4, 1882.

T:JK periodical llK'utillg!! 01 tilt! MllStfil'ton Town Lands Trust usually combine a- little amusement, with some instnic tiou, ami lust evening was no exception to the rule. The members of the deputation from the Library Committee must have felt grateful to Mr Hake for the suggestion he gave them for overcoming the iinancial embarrassments of the institution with which they were connected, Mr I [auk's proposal was a Christy Minstrel entertainment for the benelit of the destitute Institute, and no doubt for such a good cause the Town Trustees will give their assistance, Mr liKxall and Mr Hare will, we expect, cheerfully accept the onerous position of corner men, and with (.!;!■ Secretary us interlocutor, with Mr .\:i- ; '.',i:!>u: to strike the light guiiar. Mr IV.MIY with the bones, Mr Gi;\v v,i;'i (he triangle, and Mr Wi:k;i,K'i viih a step dance, a programme may be made up which will console the Library Committee for the loss of the customary grant from the Town Trust funds. There is an agreeable levity about some members.of the Town Trust which could not fail to interest and amuse the public, There are, however, some obligations which the Trust has entered into which cannot be met by expedients' of this character. Cue of these is the ,£IOO due to the Education Board, At a conference whieli took place a year ago between a deputation of members of the Board and of the Trust, it was agreed that the Trust should advance .£4OO towards the of the school. A doubt was at the rime expressed as to where the money was to ci'irie from, but an assurance was given l>y the Chairman of the Trus* ihat wh>n the money was wanted it should be'forthcoming, Well, the money has been wanted, and it lias not been foiMicomingi and vr fear ■.hat the trustees have to a certain extent broken faith with the Board, They knew [hat the money must be paid but waited till they were pressed for it before they took adequate steps towards obtaining it, We are quite open to correction but, our recollection of the conference at which an agreement was arrived at is clear as to the point that the money was to be forthcoming when it was required. If we are right, we do not wonder at the Board regarding Masterton some.vhat suspiciously and refusing to proceed with necessary improvements in the school ground till the. £4OO be paid. No doubt by an ordinary bank arrangement the Trustees could have sent i4OO to the Board at a moment's notice, and this in our opinion is the course the Trustees should have taken when they found lliafc the money was required.
