CARTERTON SCHOOL ELECTION.
r • • ■ | |". ; SIX 0? THE NEWLY-EMOTED RESIGN; The eleotion of the Carterton Spbool | Commitiee lias'resulted somewhat'BingH- , lavly—six out of the/seven elected (the , day pfter the election) having sent in their / resignation, on the ground that the election was informal, though there is no , jdonbt that the real cause of resignation—- , j'and we-tlunk it a very petty one—is ,thpt t they object to Bit with the only member } wjio was elected , who has not resigned, j and, more than that, was not asked to ; resign, when the letter of resignation was ' t being sent round, for signature. The ati tendance at'Clareville, although it arose j purely from party feeling, was a matter • i to congratulate the. district'on,' but the I Carterton election shows the evil of plural ' j voting' most thoroughly. •The residents.'. r. 5 present at Carterton were Messrs R.Fairj brother, At Armstrong, ■Woltersj, R®y W, : i ; ; , Western, 8. to stand, there pro not sufficient residebts present to fill tbo soven officeß, those nominated being the Rev W. T, Western ftlld Messrs R. FairLrothor, Hart, White, Anderson, and Viokerstaff. On this persona not present .wore nominated, until the list of nominees amounted to 14 or lIL Mr Ridgway, .the obnoxious uiembejj elected, was nominated by Mr Cohen an! seconded by Mr Armstrong, and, whilH we recognise Mr Ridgway as an lioness hardworking settler, who has b;en oveil in tho district, we should have! Mossrs Arnißtrong and Cohen naamore sense than to havo nominated him for an office, which wo feel sure he "ever aspired to, and for which he certainly is not fitted. The result of tho ballot Was that four residents presentMessrs R, Fairbrother, E, Anderson, W, Vickerataff, and H. White—were elected, 81 were also Messrs Ridgeway, Moore, and Carter, who were not-present, and whose consent to stand had not been obtained. ;.T\vo of tho ballot results will show what a perfect fiasco was made of the election, Mr Fairbrother only polling 15 votes at the head of the poll, Mr Ridgway having 14, undoubtedly two plumpers, as next on thc liat. While, as Mr Walde'u said at'the Claruville election, "the. laßt year had been terrible," we should like to sec this year as terrible in Carterton-if it-will cause people to take wore interest in these elections.
