The Wairarapa Daily. WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 26, 1882.

* : A short time ago we drew attention to the tone adopted by the: Masterton Highway Board engineer in commenting upon the weaknesses of contractors. It will bo seen by a report in another column that Mr. Bremner submitted our remarks Jo; the. Board mid that the members of it present at the late meeting gave their engineer an expression of approval on this particu lar matter, 1 .ogically they had no other alternative, having previously.received and adopted the very report which we challenged. It would, perhaps, have been better for this reason if we, in the first instance, had applied our remarks to the Board instead, of to its officer. Since we alluded to the question, one contractor-old Charley White, a man who for a generation has borne a good reputation for honest road work-called at our office and expressed himself as shamed and deeply disgraced by the public censure which had been m.eeted out to him. We do not believe that ei her the Board or its engineer 'desire to hurt the feeliugs of an old man, who attaches as much importance to his good mime as a workman as they do themselves to their own good names in their several vocations, and still hope that the practice to which we called attention will be abandoned. Of one thing we feel certain, viz,, that if it be continued the Board will be always in hot water with its contractors'and that experience will confirm the expediency of the suggestion we ventured to make.
