Maaterton, 14th January, 1882. 1 Sir, —I have tho honor to submit the .following brief report on the public works of the Wairarapa West County : ; Opuki to Manawatu Road.—Sorensen and Co.'s. contract, 5 chains formation and. metalling and the construction of a culvert. Except the metalling" this conjtract ia nearly completed. The bridge removed from this part of the road was ;23 feet long, and has been in a dangerous 'condition for some time. 1 Caahraari'B 'Contract—The erection of two 30ft. span bridges.—Nearly the whole iof the necesery materials for these bridges are delivered on the respective sites, the trusses for one bridge are framed, and pile-driving for the piers is being proceeded with, On two of the contracts'for the construction nf culverts and embankments, let by the Works Committee at' their last meeting, the Contractors have commenced work. ■ ■•;'■'. ; jDuring the past month the maintenance, imen have been engaged on general repairs iandaorub cutting, thayhave also removed >a 45ft-: span bridge at{a point about seven mile's south of Eketahuna, for which they havo substituted a culvert and embankment Pahiatna Road.-Mr Girdwood, the contractor for 44 chains formation, eto, on the principal road through the township reserve at Fahiatua, has forward J hiß men and tools to the looajity, and will qomratUw work forthwith. Ekelahuna to Alfredton Road.—The '.repairs.to this road are now completed •• aud the road open for traffic. The repairs " executed are as.follows:— Clearing away -- the Blips sufficiently to open the road for traffio;-oleaning out tho most urgently required drains; and in constructing two extra! culverts, Waipoua ißcidge Contract.—The now -Waipoua bridge was opened for traffic-, on-.' the 9th inetanfcfthe whole of the works in • connection therewith ore nearly pleted, except thp" channel :undor,;wo',.: | bridge that cannot' ; ;well bo made-how owing to the swollen-'state of the river.
