The Carterton Volunteers hold a church parade on Sunday noxt.

Tho Masterton Fire Brigade held il usual fortnightly parade laßt evening.

The members of the Masterton Eeohaoite Tent hold their usual fortnightly meeting this evening in the Tempnrence Hall, Chapel street,

The time for presenting petitions against any return in the late general elec'. tions has now expired.

nig tenders for repairing the main road frmn Castle P"int to Kahaumingi has been extended to Feb. 4th,

Mr Stamford having engaged the stabling and paddock at the Taratahi store, opposite the race course, noiifies to the public that all horses and vehicles left in his charge fur the day of the races will receive every attention.

To-morrow is the Borough election day, when three of the six candidates before the Masterton burgesses will be made happy and the remainder, left we hope, fight another day. At the last moment ihose whu are in favor of a public meeting are bestirring themselves. If they were in earnest in desiring such a gathering they shnu d have expressed their wishes a furmight back, or at least a week ago.

Yesterday we had the pleasure of inapectina "ha plans ..f the hew Wesleyan Ch.ippi which is to be erected in Carterton on the ground presented to ihe fraternity some time since by Mr Alfred Andrews, The building will'be 50 by 25, 16 feet studs in the clear,-the ridge pule being some sft Gin higher Tho whole of the timber is paid for, and ft small, balance remains in the Bank. Labor therefore Only has to be provided for, and as some of this is given voluntarily, the church may soon, it is anticipated, be erected without that bete noir—a debt hangini! over it. b h

Yesterday the Waxworks were well patronised by occasional spectators throughout the day, and in the evening there was as ou the opening night, quite a crush of visitors, who were kept amused and interested by the variety of the programme. There was a good deal of fun with theelectric boy, who is very a amusing philosophical fact and Edison's phonograph came in for its share of public Curiosity, The musical selections given are.the real lions of the Show. The elder of the Kohler brothers is probably the best all round Musician in the Australian colouies, Every evening he plays on Bome dozen different instruments, aud with each he is an adept. The wax figures _ attract many visitors, but the music is still more fasoinating than the simply irresistable. Messrs Kohier Brothers will have no reason to regret their visit to Mastetton, for they have been appreciated. Nor will any one who has paid their show a visit grudge the very modest foe with which so much pleasure is procured.

The first practice of the Carterton Volunteer Fire Brigade took place on Tuesday evening under the command of Captain Potts, the members rolling up in good force. Advantage had been taken of the Christmas holidays to take the engino to pieces, overhaul, and put her in thoroughly good order, and the result was she worked splendidly. A wet practice was indulged in for half an hour, and was spent in cleaning down the Marquis of Normanby Hotel, after which the usual monthly meeting was held, The minutes of the last meeting having been read and conhrmed, the following accounts were passed for payment :-R. E. Webb, repairs to sngine, |2los; Gardner, and Kirkcaldis and Stains, balance due on hose, £2l7s 6d; Capt. Potts, labor and material, £l, The remaining accounts were referred to the standing committee to . deal with. Foreman Hunter and Brigadier Bennett, nafing been nominated for the post of Treasurer, were then ballotted for, the result being a majority of eleven votes for , the former, who thereupon resigned hiß office of Foreman, for which Brigadiers G. Bennett, W. Greeks, and T. Gole were nominated. Captain Potts having requested to resign his office, without his proposal an unanimous vote was passed that he retain it, the feeling of the Brigade, without a dissentient voice, being that it would be quite time enough for his successor to be chosen when he was certain as to whether he was going to leave Car- [ terton, A general committee meeting was called for Friday evening at 7.30 p.m. to consider various Brigade matters, and report at the next meeting. The next practice was arranged to be a wet one, to take pUce on the Belvidere road. Monies collected by the canvassers—Brigadier Witt and Foreman Hunter-were handed in, and the roll having been called, the meeting broke up shortly before 10 o'clock,

A severe shook of earthquake is reported to have taken place during the night before last. We oannot testify te the shook itself, but we can bear witness to the fact that about 2 a,m, we were prowling about in a light costume after an imaginary housebreaker. '

• Mr J, H, Corbett of Masterton has decided to build a bathing shed on the banks of tho Waipoua, which he intends to place at the disposal of the public The gift will be much appreciated by the numerous bathers in this favorite stream, Many complaints are being made at the long continuance of the closing of Bannis-ter-street, and that no attempt appears to be made to complete the work there, the contractors for the road (Messrs Bentley Bros,) not having commenced operations. We understand . that as Bentley Bros, have, not signed the contract, and do not appear anxious to do so, it is contemplagive the work to. the next lowest tenderer. Anyhow, the work should be done without any more delay, The Amalgamated Friendly, Societies lete is to be held in Stewart's paddock, Greytown on Monday 23rd inst and not in O Connor's paddock as at first reported although it was offered and accepted, some objections were afterwards raised, which endel in the committee making arrangements for Stewarts, a much better paddock although not so centrally situated ihe programme which consists of twentytwo events has been published, and the reputation the societies have gained for liberal prizes will no doubt ensure them a very successful gathering,

The men were drilled by Odor-Sergeant Hamilton, alter which some business in connection with the corp was transacted. The report of the Uniterm Committee was read, which showed that those members who had borrowed uniforms were to pay £ 1 eao h tor them, the lenders to have the option of taking them back or receive the cash It is expected they will be all taken back, as the price of a uniform is f3log, The resignation of Sub-Lieutenant Avery was read and accepted. Those volunteers who proceeded to the front were requested to call at the becretary's office, when they would be supplied with blankets and top-coats as promised by Government. The last meeting of the season of the quadrille corp, was then held, when, it is needless tn say, all present thoroughly Mjoyod themselves—the band, as usual supplying the music, It is intended to continue these meetings next winter
