The Wairarapa Daily. WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 11, 1882.
The candidature of the jux goad men and true who now wait on,the burgesses of Mastorton does, not excite much interest-among the residents in. _.tha.| Borough. Settlers have,"'during the past-three month's, been surfeited.with election feasts. They have fed. on M.HiE, game, County cake, and Mayoral meat, and they have' little appetite left for the plain Borough fare which is now placed. before them. They are asked to imbibe municipal shandy-gaff, after quaffing ' parliamentary champagne, and it is no. wonder that they turn aside from the cup which is proffered to them. However distasteful another election may be to-burgesses who have donß.a fair amount of latterly, the present contest is an important one, inasmuch as it may, for a year or more to come, stamp the character of the representative body to which is committed much of the welfare and prosperity of the town, : It.will replace with new men one-third of the members who constitute the present, Council,- and on the selection of these three councillors depends very much whether the' town goes forward, falls'.backward, or stands still. Not one of the half-dozen requires much introduction to the ratepayers ; one and all are well-kiiown, and the only duty inoumbent on the W--gesses is to pick out the three men" who are best fitted to advanca the interests of the Borough. The ptily point on which we have dwelt when; in issue,, we referred to the: .election," was: that the-intercuts oj thorough) aid;
not of any particular section of it, should prevail. It is well-known that one portion of the town does not take this view of the contest, but holds that the representation of Kurupuni is of greater importance than the representation' of Masterton. This division of interests is, in our opinion, very undesirable, and we therefore oppose it. Weight point out that in proportion to the rates" paid,'the residents in' Queen-street ..have received a- far smaller, return, in the shape of public 'expenditure than the settlers of K.urupurii.:, We mention this simpler to show that in the genova] division of the Borough expenditure the latter part of. th? town'has done remarkably, well, -s{ 'jf ;"' -™ threatens, forces thedivision of the Borough into wards, it will be'far worse off in the future than ■it ; lias-been in the past, A suggestion hasbeeh-thrownout that.thesix candidates should make their bow on the platform of the Town Hall. If there be a general desire to hear'what they have to say, it would be well for them to comply with it, but as-yet.;no-great anxiety 'has been. manifested for a demonstration pf/.this character. No one expects.that the ayerage.of thesix speeches VouloVbe. anything'very brilliant. If there be; a..: > Deraoathena i s among the set it is probably Mr Caselberq, and he within the last few weeks has his.views on. municipal affairs, and though his.speech-was- very well-received, the desire. for : a second edition of it is riot very urgent. It is not "a 'very essential qualification for Borough Councillors to be orators—a tendency to overtalk hasbeenoneof the niost-'conspiouous municipal weaknesses in Masterton; .and we feel sure that a" more 'silent- body, would in thefuture not only do move-work, but perform it with greater efficiency, and with, a .smaller sacrifice of time. ■ Kobler's waxworks attracted a 'large 'number"of visitors last evening. There' ;was indeed quite a run on them.. While so much is being said on all sides as to the support the.volnnteevs deserve at the bands of the Government, it seems strange that the whole of the local corps should be allowed to remain for months without ammunition. They certainly cannot become good marksmen without the means of practising the art, and if they are not good shots they cannot he said to be efficient volunteers.
There has recently been a lively correspondence in a Wellington paper on eternal punishment. It arose from Archdeacon Stock expressing a conviction that there was no such thing. The Rev Mr Coffey, unwilling to resign his chance of everlasting tormeut, assailed the Archdeacon for heterodoxy, but he, in his own turn, has beeu lambed down by the Rev H. Vere White, of Groytown, who plainly proves that the Eev Richard 1b childish and superstitious,

Carterton v Masterton.-As a proof of who we the cheapest storekeepers in the Wairarapa we wish to draw our readers' special attention to B. A. Gardener & Son's advertisement on our frontpage. This firm is doteimind to keep up their reputation. Prom the time of their commencing business in Carterton they have repeatedly proved that they can withstand competition, no matter how strong, It is therefore ridiculous for another storekeeper from a neighboring township'to post price lisW to their customers and preteud to sell at wholesale prices, when for the smallest quantities B. A. Gardener & Son supply goods in almost every instance 10 to 16 per cent cheaper, and in large quantities still further conees aions are made.—(Advt
