AN ACCOUNT OF THE WAIRARAPA SMALL FARM ASSOCIATION AND OTHER MATTERS CONNECTED THEREWITH.

I By 0. E. Carter, (Continued.) ADDENDA,

I I may remind your readers that my opinion and wish respecting the surplus town acres and surplus reserves, which iii 1867 consisted of 28 town acres and 48 acres reserve, was that they should be given as an endowment to found a grammar school. Had this been done there would have been no squabbling now, and with gifts from wealthy settlers we might have been in the way to the establishment of a high class system, of education in the Wairavapa, I had the support of the public in my favor, as may be seen from the following resolutions passed in October, 1867, and which appeared in the ' Mercury 1 of October 19,1867, and a preceding number. The newspaper report respecting the Grey town meeting concluded as follows: The following resolutions, amongst others, were then put, and with a singular accord, were unanimously passedl. That the thanks of this meeting are' due, and are hereby tendered, to Mr Carter for his, very interesting address, and this meeting is of opinion that that part of it reluting to the Trusteeship of the Greytown Reserves is satisfactory. 2. That in the opinion of this meeting it is highly desirable that a grammar school should be established in the Wairarapa as soon as possible. At Masterton the following resolutions were passed by a unanimity equal to that of Greytown 1. That in the opinion of this meeting the revenue derived from the educational reserves in the Wairarapa ought to contribute a separate fund for educational purposes in the Wairarapa district, and the Chairman be requested to communicate this resolution to the Government, with 'tlie-view'of steps being taken to give it legal effect. 2. That in the opinion of this meeting it is highly desirable that one or more grammar schools should be established in the Wairarapa as soon as practicable, and that the question of site be left to the General Government, such school or schools to be under local control. 3. That the thanks of this meeting are duo and are hereby tendered to Mr C. R. Carter for his very interesting address, and this meeting is of opinion that that part of it relating to the Trusteeship of the Masterton Reserves is satisfactory^ Tho pith and meaniiig of the resolutions was to throw our Small Farm Reserves in with the Government Educational Reserves in the Wairarapa, so as to form a common fund (sure to be added to by generous and wealthy people) in order that a college or high class school might be founded in the Yalley. By our Small Farm rules education was to be protected by its reserve acres. The Small Farm Commjttee suggested jiliis, but, I may observe, wjtji regret, that tho intentions of the above resolutions were never carrjed oijt I batj t<j yield to the majority 1 |'y(aß afterwards considered njore (josiralijfj —and it certainly was more popular—to expend the funds of the Trust, at once, in public objects, partly social, and to some extent educational in their tendencies.
