THE LATE COUNTY ELECTIONS.

[To the Editor of the Din,r.|

Sir,—l notice in your issue of to-day'a date a letter from Mr Robert S. •kina on the late County -In his paragraph he regrets that the case (I presume he means the case of myself and others versus County West) was compromised, • I may say that, as the chief instigator of the petition, I do 'not regret it for various reaaonß. '

Firstly, I surmised that the chief cause of the roll not being, a correct one was • mainly due to the illness at the time of the late County clerk, who haa since • passed away. For .this reason ,it would have teen unfair to saddle the present, olerk with the then existing errors, • ■ Secondly, had the case been, gone .on with and determined iu our favour, which, no doubt, it would havß been, the riding would have been placed at a disadvantage as, in all probability, we should have had; no representative for the next three or. four months—a time when busily work in. particular should be pushed on with; and with the well-known ability of Mr MoGregor, and the great assistance which his continuance in the Council would (jive to these works, I preferred allowing matters to stand .as they were until the next roll is made up in May next I am quite satisfied so far as I am personally concerned at'the result of our petition, and I am inclined to think the public are generally; at'all events, there will be a consolation in knowing that suoh glaring errors will not likely occu again. I am, &0., Job Vile, Muaterton, 19th December, 1881.
