THE TERAWHITI GOLDFIELD.
■' (VKOM'OCI! OWN CORRESPONDENT.) 'During the last few days Wellington, in Bpite of election matters, Ims been confijdernbly excited over the gold mining interest in its neighborhood. Littlu doubt now oxists of the seaward range atTerawhiti ns ft reefing district, Last week the new working on the Golden Crown, after following down fur 50 feet a leader which started at a width of 8 inches on the surface, struck heavy gold-bearing stone, about 301bs of it being brought into town and its value recognised. Shares were immediately in great demand, over 40,000 being applied for in two days, Immediately after this, Mr Wilson, the manager of the Albion claim, camo into town with magnificent prospects from that claim. He is driving to the south, upon first-class stone, and there is every appearanco of a prosperous future fur the claim. The Meropo claim, to the south-east of the Albion, is busy putting a drive in the solid hill to cut tho reef, which they are reported to do in a few weeks. Where this claim is situato the hill is apparently very solid in its formation, and it was from here that such rich specimens were obtained about 16 yeirs ago. Taking the Albion claim as the central one," the Golden Crown lies to the north-west, and the Merope to the south east of it. A few weeks ago the proprietors of these two.lslter claims put tlum en the market at a shilling premium per share for a number of shares, A prominent auctioneer, who occasionally figures in newspaper ■J correspondence, thought proper to " protest" against this by writing a letter in the Evening Post in terms which the proprietors of the claims thought insinuated other than that their intentions were strictly honorable, It was a very unwise step on his part, for it brought forth from Mr Madden a stinging reply, which was well merited, and llie late finds have further proved tho value of the claims, Several of your Wairarapa residents, I am given to understand, have been fortunate enough to get a goodly numl-er of shares allotted lliem.' The Phcenix Company, at the head of Wairiki Creek, have now got their crushing machine and engine on the ground, and in course of erection. It will shortly be crushing, and I will not fail to let vuu know the result,
