At tue Masterton Mayoral election of 1879 the number of votes polled was 196, yesterday it was but 166. The explanation of the falling off is that two years ago both candidates worked hard for the post of honor, whereas on this occasion only one, Mr Bish, went heart and soul into the contest. Had Mr Caselberg displayed as much anxiety as Mr Bish for the office he would undoubtedly have been returned. He is, however, a busy man, and though he was willing to place his services at the disposal of the Borough, he was not prepared for any active canvass. The result is no surprise to us and the election from one point of view is very satisfactory—not a single acrimonious or unkindly word lias been said on either side, and the candidates met on the most friendly terms, We believe that Mr Bisn will act independently and straightforwardly as Mayor of this Borough. We do not doubt that he will do all in his power to promote its interests, and, as far as we are concerned, we shall do our best to support him in making his year of office a serviceable one to the Borough. We can afford to congratulate Mr Bish on the pluck and determination which has enabled him to carry his point, although we gave his opponent during the contest a preference.
