MASTERTON HORTICULTURAL AND INDUSTRIAL SOCIETY.

During the past year or two the periodical Shows of the above Society have not been marked by much indication of improvement, They suffered with the general depression of the times, and the Committee had hard work to keep its head above water. At last the persistent efforts of the Committee have met with a reward. Tho tide has turned, and the Show which has opened this afternoon is, taken as a whole, much better supplied with exhibits than any previous one. Since an early hour this morning, some half-dozen members of the Committee—who on these occasions are always at their posts-have been kept fully employed receiving and staging exhibits. The hall, under the care of Mr James Brown, the Secretary, has been well arranged, and tastefully decorated with evergreens. We shall have to hold over for our noxt issue the prize-list, the judging not having been concluded till a rattier late hour. V The marked feature at the Show uufew 1 oidedly the industrial exhibits. In tW catalogue of these Messrs Harvey, Murray, and Co.'s exhibits of mats, dressed skins, &c, take a leading place. Excellent speoimens of even rabbit pelts are presented, a silver-grey one from down South being especially noteworthy. In thiß class Mr Quick's celebrated catskin rug will perhaps suggest remorse to the destroyers of domestiopets. Mr E. Arnold has a aplendid exhibit of basket;ware. Messrs Gatscka and Parsons exhibit beer and malt. Messrs Chamberlain Bros., flour and grain. Mr Fellinghambasan exhibit of boots, including a giant shoe, / which will attract attention. Mr Clayson shines as a premier pastrycook. Messrs Dixon and Williams display well-filled cases of tobacconist wares. Mr Wilton has on view some excellent candles and soap. Mr Price contributes some ancient coins, and Mr Gardner a pair of wonderful spectacles made in the last, century. A. buggy made by Messrs Muir and Dixon, is, a contre piece and a masterpiece among: other exhibits. We must, however, hold over for our next issue our detailed report of the many and varied attractions of the -show. We may mention that in the . floral department Mrs Collins" has . materially assisted the show by ; nu'merous : and valuable contributions, ''and^that'' :Mesßrß;Bmith"aiid ;-'Hot(g;V,Bi}Ter.' bup 'for.. the best garden has been awarded by tn» , judges, Messrs Bagge Park, and Worth, to Mr Hans Petersen, who was assigned; 1 60 out of a possible 7& points, Mr Rayner coming next with 49 points. ——— ■ n i .'«M
