GENTLEMEN.-In answer to the very large requisition you have presented me with I feel extremely pleased with the honor you have (lotto me and confidence you have displayed in me, especially as it was unsought for and unexpected on my part. A? the requisition represents bo very large and influential a section of the Burgesses of Mastorton I have muoh pleasure"-" in acceding to it, and if elected I promise to do my duty to the best of my ability without fear or favor, and to work in unison with the Councillors for the good of the whole 'Borough and to conduct tho deliberations of the Council with propriety, My personal views are well known to a large number of the requitiomsls, butnow state for the information of other ratepayers that they arc emphatically progressive and at the same time hike fkom recklessness. It will be my aim to assist in fostering such measures as will promote the substantial welfare and advancement of the Borough so as to enable it to attain the position its natural advantages warrants. At the same titno I will consider it my duty to counsel the ratepayers against unmatured'schemes for reckless borrowing and expflnditure, and will use my best endeavors to protect the Burgesses from being weighted down with excessivo and burdensome rates. In conclusion. I wish to explain my reasons for not having taken part in local matters ere this, are that although having large interests in the Borough, I have not till now had leisure time at my disposal, and partly from not wishing to push myself forward to tho exolusion of other gentlemen who had prior olaims on the suffrages of the Burgesses.—l aw, &0., .
