THE WRECK 1 OF THE PENGUIN,

The official enquiry as to the stranding of tho Penguin in the French Pass will be held this day, Mr Shaw (late Resident Magistrate) watches the case as counsel for Captain Malcolm. The enquiry will be before Mr Hardcastle. MR STOUT'S LECTURE. Mr Stout lectured last night at the Theatre Royal on " Evolution " and " Theism," There was a large but not a very appreciative audience, REGISTRATION OF ELECTORS. Stout has given legal opinion that if persons claim to he registered under Sections seven and eight of the Registration of Electors Act, 1879, the Registrar after fifteen days, if he thinks the claimant's statement true, must register the claim, notwithstanding tho issue of the writs. This will involve the preparation of a secondisupplementary iroll.,

THE RETURNING HEROES, 'Nelson, The Volunteers on their return pel Hinemoa on Saturday evening, received 1 public ovation. A procession was formoc escorting them from the port to tho fool of Church Hill, where the Town Clerk read an address of welcome. Eight thousand persons were present.
