IMPORTANT DECISION. In the criminal - libel caBO against the Patea Mftjl by William Dale, junior, auotloneer and active politician, the proceedings were against Edward Houghton, proprietor of the Mail, for publishing an alleged inalicio.us and defamatory libel by reporting ft conversation he bad with ' aratepayei', which damaged his chance,qf election to the mayoralty. ' Mr Dale denied the conversation. The. ratepayer was -in court to swear to it as substantially true. „. . . , ■ ..The. investigation's in the R.M. Court occupied two days, and after the prosecuI tor's case closed, the defendant, who con- J ducted his own oase, made an address alleging lie bad reasonable grounds to believe the alleged libel- whs true, that it related to an important public matter, and being justified by the occasion, there wai , no malice. The Magistrate then dismissed the case without requiring evidence for the defence.
