The usual monthly meeting of the Greytown Borough. Council takes place this evening,

The Greytown Volunteers drill tomorrow evening.

Two or three of the good folks about Carterton, on Thursday, bad to interview Mr B. Boys, J.P., on Friday, owing to a too free sampling of the liquor exhibits on the previous day. Messrs P. H. Wood & Co. held one of their usually successful miscellaneous sales at their sale rooms in Carterton on Saturday afternoon.

On Saturday evening another shop in Cnckhurn's Block was opened by Miss Delwood, with a very handsome display of fancy goods, toys, Berlin wools, and a variety of other articles. The shop was very tastefully laid out, and when lit up looked very pretty.

Dr Hotking notifies that he will be absent from the Wairarapa for a few days, and that Drs Bey and Farquharson will visit Masterton daily while he is away, for the purpose of seeing his patientß.

There will b? the usual fortnightly sitting of theR.M. Court at Featherston to-day. Mr A. W. Renall invites the electors to meet him at Tinui on Saturday neit. A roll cif notes has been lost in Masterton, and is advertised for in another column.

Tenders tiro invited by Mr E. Wrigley for the erection of a cottage.

Great excitement was occasioned in Greytowo on S iturday last at noon by the receipt of a telegram stating that Te Whiti, Tuhu, and Hiroki were arrested. The newj being confirmed a short time after by another telegrira. The local paper published an extra, which scattered the news far and wide, and caused many that bad friends at, the front to heave sighs of relief, to think it had been done without bloodshed.

The excitement attending the news from the front was aptly taken advantage "f in Greytown for electioneering purposes, fura very energetic candidate could lie seen wherever a knot of persons assemhied, and the conversation soon turned to the pitlitic.il. " Success to our Volunteers" was ngain and again drank, and whether the toasters were Maoris or Chinamen it did not much matter to the energetic, as ho paid without a murmur, We understand that as Mr P. Q, Moore is retiring from, the Wairarapa West Council, and will not come forward •for re-election, Mr Hawkins will, at the request, of several leading settlers, place h s services at tho disposal of the electors ■ f the Mnetertmi Hdiog. are glad to hear this, for Mr Hawkins is undoubtedly as a public loan ai any we possess in 'he district, and he will he likely to do ■ooil service for any division of the county for which he may bo returned. A person who was prpsent at Mr Renall's Eliotiihuni meeting writing to a friend in Masterton describes it in the following characteristic terms:—" The speech was a very rambling affair. He found fault with many matters, hut forgot to explain his method of improving or altering them. Ho seems to have a talent for talking without coming pointedly to the question ; for saying n good deal without giving the audience the slightest information. On the whole it was a yery unenthnsinstic meeting, Nothinghesaid was contradicted. He was neither cheered nnr hissed, A few men were s'eep'ng soundly and snoring heartilv all ilin time, and in the end thev •pfiiiipd to have enjoyed themselves the best. The settlers think they would havp had a be'tpr opinion, of him had they never heard him.

.-.. The Grev'niYit Constable was called on Vurdav morning to settle a denote between some ladies who live at Cottervilla. Rnn'h Grevtnwn, nnd if he was successful his efforts deserve tn be nwnispd in a very niMan'inl manner, fir (adds a correspondent), when I visited the scene it was n perfect Bihel, nnd a matter of imnwlhil'tv fur nny«nß. hut the pennn s'e iking, to known what was said Bo* those Indies knew whit krs said, and were determined to make each other prnvp thw words Bv what could be gathered from a strnv word nnw nnd then/the row enmme ced .thus:— Mrs A's husband has gone tn the front, Mrs B. aod.O. not., bavin? a very great liking for her, commenced n Sfli'iea of annoyances sn as to send her fn the frqnt, or oomewhere else, an effigv of Mr A. was made and burned- : n front of her bouse; whenever she went nut a band nf urchins with tins fo„ followed her, when she returned, she would find notices posted on the doors, the following is one:—" To lett, the last tennent gone to the frnnnt." This con'inued for wme time, till at last poor Mrs A. was obliged to leave her own house, ■Hid gn into one where she will have to nay rent. This is no doubt a very hnrd case, especially ns the poor woman has «nme young children tn keep; but as bmg as there are two or three somen *n?other there is no doubt hut what there will he a row. If the G'eytown Constable has restored pence In that neighborhood he has conferred a boon upon the inhabitants living spthin a radius nf a quarter of a mile of A. B, and C's, residences.

Boys, and W Buoth, were declared duly nominated, The ceremony attraoted but little notice, only two old identities, the returning officer's substitute; and our own correspondent being present. A meeting of the vestry of § Mark's Church, Carterton, was held on Wednesday evening last, the Rev. W. T. Western occupying tho chair, A long discussion took place as to the purchase of the proposed- sito for the Parsonage. The estimated purchase money was between M) and £JO, and ultimately it was agreed to purchase if the money in hand was and Messrs Booth & Co, undertook to find the balance with their usual liberality. Mr R. J. A. Fairbrother) for her past services as organist, and the appointment of Mr Wilsone to the same office was confirmed. It is a fact tbat Messrs Gardener and Son sold last season more sheep shears than the whole of the Wairarapa store keepers combined, ami thjs season it is their intention to offer the 100 dozen pairs which they have imported at lew than Wellington wholesale prices. We cannot understand how this well-known firm apljL all their goods so wonderfully cheap Their stank js splondjtily assorted, and we would call special attention to then 1 mag uilicent stoulc of drapery, which surpasses any we have yet seen iu the Wairarapa. —[Advt.l The Hon. John Bryce struck terror into the heart of Te Whiti on Saturday. Rapp and Haro will strike terror into the hearts of rival storekeepers shortly iiy soling KiucGiies and ululhing at Wellington wholesale prices, Look out for new advertisement; we are still the che>penth ousp in tu\vu, and defy competition,— [Advt]
