The Wairarapa Daily. MONDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 1881.

Mr. Retail during the present contest has repeatedly attacked the County Weit Council on the gronnd that it is a mere distributing body, receiving only cums of money from tho Government for division amongst highway boards It is just as well, as the county elections may be prejudiced by such statements, to contradict them Mr Recall's declaration that this county is or has been a mere distributing body is about as plain and unvarnished a falsehood as any public man can utter. Mr Bbsail is not very particular what he says at any timo, and it would be idle to challenge all the reckless assertions which he is wont to make. When, however, in his capacity as a candidate for a seat in Parliament, he descends to the gravestand most transparent misrepresentation of a body which has for some years pisfc been working for the benefit of the Wairarapa district, it is time that some remonstrance should he made. Mr Rmu cannot plead ignorance He can hardly say that ho was not awaro that the county wis budding a bridge across the Waipoua and that it was erecting a similar stiuc'ii-e over the Wai'diiiio. He has travelled through tho forty-mile hush, over miles of road and scores of bridges made by this mere distributing body. He has visited | Mamiceville, Eketahuna, where county works are apparent on all sides. If he poosesses any in'elligence at all be must know that the county has done a great work in settling an industrial population to the north of Masterton, which has increased materially our tnde and population. If Mr Rexah; had done a tithe of the good for Masterton that the county Ims effected, we Rhould he amongst hia supporters. Mr Benau is an able speaker and from men who have the great gift of ready and eloquent speech we expect to hear something better than slanderous falsehoods. We would remind Mi TtoiU, of Carlylo's words, " If a great speaker, w eloquent speaker, lie not speaking the truth what more horrid o'J3ct is there in creation."
