The Wairarapa Daily. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 1881.
Mr, G. Beetham's meeting on Wednesday last must have strengthened his position in Masterton. Though by no means a brilliant orator his straightforward utterances commanded the respect of even his opponents and the niauly independence which lit; exhibited when unduly pressed by a factious opposition was. duly appreciated, The other side prepared a long string of questions which were intended to confound him, but the straight honest manner in which he replied to them probably won for him the confidence of many who were previously opposed to him, The good taste of Mr Renall in following Mr Beetiiasi's address with one of his own was more tlian questionable, itENALL evidently was not satisfied with having had his own innings but desired to take a slice of Mr Beetham's into the bargain. In such points Mr Renall may obtain a temporary advantage but these petty trespasses will be amply avenged when the ballot box is opened up. The result of this election is a certainty for Mr Beetham and the feeling in his favor among all classes is growing daily stronger. Every unfair advantage taken by Mr Renall simply reacts against himself, and even if at the commencement of the election contest he had had a majority, he would probably by his own injudicious utterances lose it before the campaign en led. Mr Renall, however, never had a majority or even a substantial minority in his favor in the North Wairarapa Electorate, and unless he changes vory much he never will have either tlr .n or the other, Mr Beetham has in ii.s life and conduct followed the Shakespearean precept—"To thine own self be true
And it must follow, as the ui>»ht the day, Thou canst not then be falso to any man." But what can be said of Mr Hknvll with his Shylock soul, ':' braggart tongue and his recklessne.;.; ;.i'ai] moral and social observances. Is Wairarapa North to become a by-word and a reproach among the electorates of the colony by sending such a .nan into Parliament as its representative!
