The Cartorton Rifle Volunteers hold a Church parade to-morrow morning, Dr Beard, of Masterton, has lieon appointed public vaccinator for the Castlepoint District, The Chairman of the Carterton Local Board notifies tbat Thursday next—the Pastoral Show day—will be a public holiday. All Carterton Volunteers who intend to »o to the front, are requested to meet at the Public Hull this morning. Any who cannot attend, are requested to send in their names to Captain Snodgrass during the day, The triennial election nf Councillors for Wairarapa County West, is advertised for the 16th of November. The sth of November is the nomination day for the Featherston and Carterton Ridings, the 7th of November for the Masterton Riding, and Bth of November for the Alfredton, Greytown, and Otaraia Ridings. The Greytown contingent for the front, continue to increase in number, and it is expected that when the order arrives, that they will send the strongest force from among the Wairarapa Corps. Mr G; •Beetham has placed himself in communication with Mr Rennll and other settlers in' Masterton with a view to giving the. Volunteers who are going to the front some slight formal farewell prior to their departure. This will probably take the form of a supper this evening, and though the affair will necessarily be a hurried one, the hearty and sincere feeling which exists between our Volunteers and the citizens of Masterton will make up for the short notice on which it has to he arranged.

The writs will be out about the first week in November. Persons who are not registered will have an opportunity of qualifying up to the end of next week. After then the rolls will probably he closed, The elections will tako place during the first week in December,

A meeting of the sub-committee of the Masterton Clothing Factory shareholders was held on Thursday, when the correspondence recently received from Wales by Mr Powell was read. As more information was to follow by the next mail, it was decided not to issue a prospectus till it was received.

Messrs J, lorns and Co.'s sale this afternoon includes cattle, horses, harness, carts, and pot and flowering plants. The catalogue is so varied that a large attendance at it nmy be anticipated. The announcement which has appeared in our advertising columns some time since stating that the landed estate of tho late Mr C. Dixon was being surveyed and would be offered for sale at an early date, has excited considerable interest in tho district, as the land is well known to be amongst the most valuable in the Wairarapa, Those interested will no doubt be glad to learn from our advertising columns that the sale, which has been entrusted to Messrs T. Kennedy Macdonald and Co., the well-known auctioneers of Wellington, will take place on the 17th November next, and as the Trustees have decided to sell every lot without reservation in order to close the estate, the sale will bo a decided guide us to the value of property in the township, and will prove if capitalists here still have faith in the prospects of the Borough. For these reasons, if no other, it will give us pleasure to be able to report a successful sale. The property has been subdivided into convenientlv-sized allotments, which should all purchasers, particulars of which are given in another column.

It may not be generally known that there is a clause (No. 167) in the new Licensing Act which runs ps follows "When it slmll be made to appear in open vJouvt that any person by excessive drinking of liquor misspends, wastes, or lessens bis or bar health or endangers or interrupts the happiness of his or her family, the Justices presiding in such Court shall by writing under the hands of any two such Justices, forbid any licensed person to sell to him or her any liquor for the space ot one year, _ awl such Justices or any other two Justices may at the same or any other time in like manner forbid the selling of any such liquor to the said drunkard by any such licensed person of any other city, town, or district, to which the drunkard shall or may be likely to resort to the same." The penalty provided a breach of this section is a sum not exceeding £lO. This clause of course only comes into force after due notice has been given to the publicans. It will have been noticed from our telegrams tbat the clause has been brought m force at Dimedin in the case of a man wlio attempted to commit suicide through drink. It is a fact that Messrs Gardener and Son sold last season more sheep shears than the whole of the Wairarapa storekeepers combined, and this season it is theirintention to offer the 100 dozen pairs which they have imported at less than. The Scandinavian ball in the Town Hall last evening in aid of the Lutheran Church was a great success in spite of unfavorable weather. Nearly fifty couples were on the flour and the gallery was crowded with visitors. Mr Cullen acted as caterer. Mr .T, Bentley as master of ceremonies. There was an excellent band under the leadership of Mr Luudquvist.
