INDUSTRIAL SOCIETY MEETING.
The meeting called to form a Society fn> the purpose of exhibiting local prnduc tions and manufactures, works of art, &•„ was held at the Borough Council Chambers, Mastertou, last evening, Mr J. Vile in the chair, There were not many present, but those who were represented a number of branches of trade, as well as the farm, and were thoroughly in earnest about the business of the meeting. Mr R. Brown, as the convenor of the meeting, explained why it had been called, There had been many expressions of opinion lately that a show of local productions, poultry, manufactures, &c.. should be held in connection with the Horticultural Society, managed by a special committee of it, The Society ha ! already a list of miscellaneous productions on its programme. The pastoral Sncietv went a little further, but probably both would be glad to relieve their programmes of these exhibits if s society were formed especially to show them. Tho proposn' would not clash with the Horticulture Society, but could be worked in connec tion with it, Two days' show could be held, one for fruits, flowers, vegetables, ftc, and the other for local produce, poultry, workt of art, ka. Mr D'Arcy approved of the scheme, but i|uestioned whether the Horticultural Society had power to alter its, programme now it was published. Mr Pay ton agreed with Mr D'Arcy. He was in favor of a Society of the kind, bu 1 thought it would be better tn wait unti' the forthcoming shows of the Horticnl'u ral and Pastoral Societies had been held hefore inaugurating it, as it would be said the promoters had an intention of prejudicing those exhibitions. He advocate'' obtaining a site from the Town Lands Trustses, and erecting upon it a sufficiently large shed in which to hold the Horticultural and Industrial Shows,a f tin? same time the building would be useful for many other purposes, such as a drill shed, &c. The show being thus made of a permanent character, would attract visi tors and exhibits from all parts of the Wairarapa. Mr Brown thought they had be't?r make a start at once. It would only be necessary to appoint a committee to report on the matter at a subsequent meeting. He, of course, did not desire to upset the arrangements of forthcoming shows. He would move—That in the opinion of this meoting it is desirable to form a committee to inquire into the practicability of holding an exhibition of local manufactures, arts, &c.; such committee to confer with the Horticultural Society and report to a future meeting. Seconded by Mr Hoar and carried. Mr Jago moved—That the following gentlemen be a committee to draw up a report—to be laid before a future meeting:—Messrs Muir, J. Hessev, Vflp, Parsons, Chinchen, E. Dixon, Hoar, T. H. Murray, Redman, Payton, and the mover, withpower to add to their number, This was seconded by Mr R, Brown and carried.
Mr Redman was requested to act as secretary, on the motion of Mr Payton, seconded by Mr B, Dixon,
