The Wairarapa Daily. SATURDAY, OCTOBER 22, 1881.
We congratulate the colony on ara : n obtaining the services of Mr dkyce as Native Minister. It ought never to have lost them, and wln-n a year ago his colleagues refused to listen to his bold councils we worn of the opinion that he was in the right, and that they, in their fear to grasp the nettle firmly, were in the wrong. It may, however, be said that the Hall Ministry, with their proverbial honesty, are always willing to admit an error in judgment and correct it. This has been done by the re-appoint-ment of Mr Bbvcr to the Native portfolio, and we may now expect to see the Native nonsense finally settled An ultimatum has been offered to Te Whiti and his followers, which thev will probably reject, ft was a very proper course to offer an alternative of such a character before having recourse to coercion, but what we would have liked to have sern would hare been the ultimatum offered one day and the coercion applied the next. The probable effect of the ultimatum will bo to prepare I he Maoris for hostilities, and every day that passes between the issuing of the ultimatum and the carrying out of its consequences will be in favor of the Natives and make the work which the OowrniwMit has to perform all the heavier. We anticipate but little bloodshed. There is not much light left in the Maoris, and if a judicious advance be made on Parihaka the Maoris will be tumbled over very easily. The public throughout New Zealand will have confidence in Mr Bryck, and will believe that the work which he began so well three years ago will at last be brought by him to a successful conclusion. Miss Pennefeather, who steppad out of a window ol'Toinaslown Castle, and fell i-ome i! 0 feet down but was not very seriously injured was more fortunate than a young lady in Kingston and an officer of the 47th Foot who were both killed ecently by fancying they had a balcony in front of them.
Du M.iurier observed one day an odd thing on the Hue track at the Derby. The immense sea nf faces seemed only a mass of blended color, when presently strange shades i-f light mid dark red surged over ihe whole, iiinler the artist's educated eye. An American engineer is trying to improve the speed of the locomotive by the application of the principle that a small wheel, when driven by a large one makes more revolutions than the motor wheel. He has constructed an engine on this ii'inoipie. The novel engine drew a train full of officials over the Canada Southern Railway frora Amhevstlmryto St Thomas a distance of 111 miles in 98 minutes.

It is a fact that Messrs Gardener and Son sold last season more sheep shears than the whole of the Wairarapa storekeepers combined, and this season it is their intention to offer the 100 dozen pairs which they have imported at less than Wellington wholesale prices, We cannot understand how this well-known firm sell all their goods so wonderfully cheap Their stock is splendidly assorted, and we would call special attention to their magnificent stock of drapery, which surpasses any we have yet 6eon in the Wairarapa,
