Ualloway 1o Messrs C. A, Vallance, David Picker ing, W. H. Hosking, George Fannin, J, Williams, and the other Gentlemen signing tho requisition:— GENTLEMEN.—In answer to the very large requisition you have presented me with I feel extremely pleased with the honor you have done me and confidence vou have displayed in me, especially as it was unsought for and unexpected on my part, At the requisition represents so very large and influential a section of the Burgesses of Masterton I have much pleasure in acceding to it, and if elected I promise to do my duty to tho best; of my ability without (ear or favor, and lo work in unisen with the Councillors for the good of the whole Borough and to conduct the deliberations of the Council with propriety. My personal views are well known to a large number of the requitionisls, but now state for the iii/ermation of other ratepayers that they arc emphatically moores-ive and at the same timo free from recklessness. It will be my aim to assist in fostering such measures as will promote the substantial welfare and advancement of the Borough so as to enable it to attain the position its natural advantages warrants. At the same time I will eonsider it my duty to counsel the ratepayers against unmatured schemes for reckless borrowing and exp»nditure, and will use my best endeavors to protect the Burgesses from being weighted down with excessive and burdensome rates. • In conclusion. I wish to explain my reasons for not having taken part in local matters ere this, are that although having large interests in the Borough, I have not till now had leisure time at my disposal, and partly from not wishing to push myself forward to tho exclmion of other gentlemen who had prior claims on the suffrages of the Burgesses.—l am, &c, M.
