The Carterton Riflu Volunteers will assemble for Church parade on Sunday next,
The usual fortnightly si'iing of the R.M. Court at Masterton takes place today. The firing for the "citizens badge" by the Greytown Volunteers commences on Saturday next at 10 o'clock.
The number of new names enrolled for the North Wairarapa supplementary roll is 120, and for the South Wairarapa 50.
There were 350 children in attendance at Ihe Masterton public school yesterday, the largest number which has yet been recorded,
Tenders are invited hy the Cashpoint Highway Board for there metalling contracts and for the lease of the Tenui toll. The Board met on .Saturday last. Our reportof it is crowded out of our present issue but will appear to-morrow.
The final entertainment of the Carterton Committee is announced for Wednesday the local committee will bo assisted by members of the Featlierston Dramatic Club. The Rev Richard Powell informs us that he has received from England an estimate of the cost of a wimllen factory, including buildings and all tH'cessiiiT machinery, which he will lay hebie the Committee appointed to report un the question.
A short time ago a purse was pre'ented to Mr Edward Duncnn by members of the Wesleyan Chirch, Mnstertnn, in recogni linn of services he had rendered in conducting the Church music during the period that Mrs Gapper was prevented by illness from presiding at the harmonium, Mr Saunders, in a recent address to his constituents, strongly advocated free trade, and regretted that there were so many in favor of protection, He said New Zealand could not adopt a protective policy and compeie with Americi. Protection was calculated to suit a few manufacturers,
The usual weekly drill of the Greytown Volunteers was very well attended on Tuesday evening, Captain Tully being in command, Lieuts. Cameron and Avery being also present, The company were drilled by Drill Instructor Bazar, and acquitted themselves very well. After the company were dismissed the Hall was occupied by the Quadrille Corps till 11 o'clock, dancing being kept up with great spirit till that hour, the band as usual supplying the music.
We understand that in the event of the Rev John Dukes deciding to leave Mnstertnn it is probable that the Rev Samuel Griffith will be asked to succeed him, The congregation should, in our opinion, make every effort to retain the services of Mr Dukes for another term. A meeting of the supporters of Mr A. W. Renall will be held at the Temple Chambers this afternoon for the purpose of forming a committee for securing his return.
A mooting of persons favorable to establishing a local society for exhibiting produce, local manufactures, poultry &c. —will be held in the Council Chambers on Friday evening the 21st inst. at 8 p.m. A meeting of the Masterton Cemetery Trustees was held yesterday. PresentMessrs Pay ton (in the chair). Hare, J. McGiegor, Kelleher, and Perry. A request signed by fourteen residents for permission to erect a bathing shed on the ground of the Trust near tho Waipoua was acceded to. Tenders were opened for moving 300 yds earth and gravelling on the cemetery. Mr Phillips tender at £l9 15s was accepted, tenders from Bentley Biosatfi2s,MrMunro at £2G 13s, and Mr W. F. York at £22 were declined. Mr James McGregor gave a notice of motion to re-consider the scale of cemetery feos at tho next meeting. A meeting of the Masterton School Commutes was luld last evening. Pre-sent-Messrs Buddington (Chairman), D'Arcy, Vile, Russell, and Paytnn, Leave of absence was granted to Mr Wuitte for a few days. Messrs Boddington and D'Arcy wel'e appointed as a sub-commit-tee to confer with the Town Trustees re its grant-in-aid. The Head-master reported that the averse attendance had risen from 270 to 307, and that Colonel Pearce hud referred his application for a school cadet corps to the Government. It was resolved tn apply te the Board for a residence lor the Head-master. Sundry routine accounts having been passed for payment, Messrs Vile and Russell were appointed visiting members, and the meeting adjourned. The Dramatic Club held a meeting last evening, at which it was decided to hold the next performances of tho Club on the two nights of the Opaki Races, December 7th and Bth. The pieces ch"sen for the occasion are "the Chimney Corner" and "Debt", The chimney corner is a two act domestic drama from tho powerful pen of Mr H. T. Graven and in every way tuited to the well known capabilities of our local amateurs. The other piece is a two act comedy by Mr E. A, De Pass never before played in New Zealand, it liavin« been only lately produced at tho Gaiety Theatre, London.; The dialogue is ini'St sparkling throughout and culcu lated to keep an audience thoroughly amused from beginning to end. Mr J. M. Giidlestone was appointed Stage Manager in the place of Mr Clayson resigned and ho was instructed to cast the above pieces and pit them in rehearsal at onco.
