Mr John Edmondson, formerly wellknown in this district, has returned to the colony from China in the schooner May.
The old Town Hall at Carterton is now, by the order of the Local Board, being painted and otherwise renovated to accord with the new school buildings. The block will add considerably to the appearance of the lowor end of the township.
Teachers of the various state schools in the district have been invited to attend a meeting at Greytown on Saturday to discuss the advisability of forming a Wairarapa Teachers' Association.
The petition in favor of the retention of Constable Evans in Carterton has received very numerous signatures, and hopes are confidently expressed that the township will not lose the services of that unobtrusive but efficient officer.

Price, a Tn Aro candidate, said he was not in favor of any protective duties, as lie felt convinced that the working man would rue the day they initiated protection, which would assuredly reduce his wages as' it had done in Victoria under Mr Berry's Government.
Reports are rife to the effect that the meetitnr between the Native Minister and Te Whiti was entirely unsatisfactory, hence the abrupt departure of the former to Wellington tn consult, his colleagues. It is said that an actual insult was given by Te Whiti.
An interesting case will be hoard at the B.M. Court, Mastorton, on Thursday next. The Eev J. C. Andrew, who, if he had been a lawyer would have led the bar in New Zealand, has brought an action against Mr Sutton, Inspector of Sheep, ior declaring his flock ns a whole infected when only a portion of it was scabby. This case will no doubt tend to settle an interesting point in the Sheep Act.
Twenty-three of Messrs Beetham Brothers' sheep have been shorn at the Camp, Featherston, preparatory to exhibiting them at the Pastoral Show, the dip from each ranging from 111b to 151b, Such sheep must he profitable,
The remains of the late Miss Eglinlon, of Palliser Bay were brought to St John's Church. Featherston, on Saturday last, where the service was read by the Eev H. Vere White, and were afterwards conveyed to the Greytown Cemetery, There were a large number of old settlers at the grave, much sympathy being expressed with the parents who had lost their eldest daughter at an age when life and hope are usually in full vigor.
A case of honesty has reached ub whieh seems worthy of record, It appears that a few days since a lad named James Gorman, attending the Carterton school, found on the public road a handkerchief containing a considerable sum of money in coin, which he immediately took to the head master, Proper enquiries resulted in the discovery of the rightful owner of this treasure-trove, and the finder of the Bonanza was suitably rewarded.
The Carterton School Cricket Club opened the season on Saturday afternoon with a match played in Mr Bowles' paddock, adjoining the English Church, between two elevens chosen respectively by the head and second masters, which, after a closely contested game, resulted in favor of Mr Samuel's team by four runs. At the termination of the match, hearty cheers were given by the victors for their plucky opponents, and were as cordially responded to. A fair sprinkling of spectators witnessed tho play with .evident satisfaction. Wo believe it, is in contemplation to challenge the Masterton boys to try conclusions at an early date,
Divine Service was held in St Mark's Church, Carterton, on Sunday morning and evening, when the Church was thronged by a numerous and earnest congregation. At evening service the gallery had tn be put into requisition in order to accommodate the large number of worshippers. The Rev W. T. Western, the recently appointed incumbent, preached in a very impressive manner, and his eloquent discourses were listened to with rapt attention. The' Choir, under the leadership of Mr Wilson, rendered the musical portions of the service in greatly improved stylo, In the afternnnn the Rev Mr Western addressed the Sunday School children.

Wardoll for the Wairarapa South in the coming elections. The storm which raged on Thursday last on the English, coast destroyed fifty boats, and caused the death of fully two hundred Northumberland fishermen. A meeting in connection with the local Fire Brigade will hp held in the Carterton Town Hall thio evening, Mr W. Booth in the chair. < The Wairarapa and East Coast Pastoral Society advertise additional prizes offered by the Wellington Chamber of Commerce for exhibits of wheat, barley, and hops. An umbrella tent 9ft diameter is advertised for sale in another column. It is a very handy contrivance, shutting up in just the same manner as an umbrella, and it can be carried with ease and erected immediately. The sub-committee appointed by the Masterton Borough Council to revise the by-law relating to the Building Regulations as regards No 1 district, make a tour of inspection through the tows to-day to ascertain if any alteration is advisable. A meeting of the Stewards of the Featherston Racing plub was held in the Victoria Hotel InstfFhursday night. The sub-committee appointed to look after the improvements to the course reported that the work had been completed to their satisfaction, the course having been ploughed, levelled, &c., and sown down in grass. The races were then discussed and adopted, it was also decided to run under the W.J.C. rules for racing as far as practicable. A sub-committeo was afterwards appointed to meet on Wednesday to draw up a programme for the meeting on New Year's Day. Mr Nichols has kindly allowed the Club to hold their races on his property, and from the situation, and the care that has been taken to get the course into good order the meeting should be a very successful one. A correspondent writes as follows : The newly-appointed pastor of the Carterton district—the Rev W, T. Western—celebrated Divine service at St Mark's Church on Sunday. At the reception on Thursday last Mr W. Booth expressed a wish that the church would be filled morning and evening, and it was gratified to the fullest extent. The boys were drafted off into the gallery, and yet the body of the church was filled to overflowing at both, services, Having got a clergyman, the only thing now wanted is tbo transposition of Gregorian for Anglican chants, the placing of the harmonium and choir in a position where all sound can freely radiate throughout the building, and the weeding out of the choir of those voices which may in a few years become very effective, but are ai present somewhat reedv, and the substitution of move efficient leaders m their place. Tho celebration of the Holy Eucharist will take place on Sunday morning next.
Mrs Burrows and a friend Iwd a narrow escape for their lives on Sunday evening. The lamps were being lit on the buggy when a horse and cart, tenantless, rushed past at a maddening speed. Had they started a few minutes earlier it is more than probable that a serious collision would have taken place and the occupants of the buggy have been injured, if not killed.
Mrs Gardener, of Carterton, has presented a handsome timepiece to the Waihakeho School Committee tor the use of the school. ; We would remind our readers that the meeting of the Taratahi and Carterton householders takes place at the Public Hall, Carterton, this evening, The chair will be taken at 7,30 by Mr W. Booth, and it is anticipated that Messrs Boys, Buchanan, and other influential residents of the township and its vicinity will address the meeting when a full record of the proceedings of the Fire Brigade since its inauguration, with particulars as to its internal working, will he submitted for the consideration of the inhabitants. The Carterton and Taratahi districts are about to lose-a valuable denizen in the person of Mr T. Gibson, who has for some time past been managing MrT. Hooker's chemist shop and practising the art of veterinary. He leaves at the end of this week to manage Messrs Baggerley's business in Dunedlu. We hope his successor may bs as capable and courteous as his predecessor. The United States assay office iu New York holds £12,000,000 in bullion, and is unable to ship any of it to the mints because of the exhaustion of the congressional appropriation for that purpose.
It is a fact that Messrs Gardener and Sou sold last season more sheep shears than the whole of the Wairarapa storekeepers combined, and this season it is their intention to offer the 100 dozen pairs which they have imported at less than Wellington wholesale prices. Wo cannot understand how this well-known firm sell all their goods so wonderfully cheap Their stock is splendidly assorted, and we would call special attention to their magnificent stock of drapery, which surpasses any we have yet seen in the .Wairarapa. —[Advt.l
