At Winston, Missouri, at 7 o'clock on July 16, a gang of masked robbers stopped the Chicago and Rock Island Pacific train. The conductor of the- train was shot dead The driver deserted the engine and his place was taken by one of the gang, A passenger who moved in his seat was instantly shot dead. The express safe was robbed, but the amount was under £4OO. The robbers then begun to plunder the passengers, but were "frightened by the brakesman springing the automatic brakes, and so starting the train. The sheriff pursued with a party of 60 constabels.
