The Wairarapa Daily. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 14, 1881.

Wk undei'stmntl that there are about one thousand electors on the roll for the northern subdivision of the Wairarapa, and about twelve hundred for the southern subdivision. It may be anticipated that about one-third of them will not exercise their franchise, and we may therefore expect to see about six hundred votes polled in the Northern district and about eight hundred in the Southern one. Tn the latter district Carterton will probably poll over three hundred votes, and Greytown and Featherston a little more than two hundred each. To these may be added some sixty or seventy votes at Otaraia, and the list will be complete. If there be four candidates polling, the votes will lie very much split up. In Carterton Mr Boys will probably head the list, but Mr Buchanan and Mr Bunny will not be a very long distance behind him.. In Greytown Mr Buchanan may be expected to take the lead, with Mr Bunny second, In Featherston Mr Pharazyn and Mr Bunny will be to the front pretty close together, and at Otaraia MrPharazynand Mr Buchanan will take the bulk of the votes. We question whether a single candidate will poll three hundred votes, or that there will be fifty votes between the highest and the lowest at the poll, At the last election six hundred votes were required for a seat; but in the present campaign the candidate who. obtains three hundred will be a happy man. Of course it is within the range of possibilities that all four candidates for the southern division will not go to the poll. In tlie interests of the district we hope to see the number reduced, etherwise the result may be the return of a candidate who does not really represent the majority of the electors. In this division of the Wairarapa a less percentage of votes are likely to be recorded, as the population north of Masterton is spread over a large area. At Masterton over four hundred votes will probably be recorded. Mauriceville willj;', we expect, poll tinder one hundred, and we do not expect more than a hundred to be sent in from the Whareatna district. To these numbers some thirty may be added from Gladstone, At the last election Mr Beetham polled in the Northern subdivision four hundred and fifty votes, against two /hundred and. forty-three given to Mr Bunny and two hundred, arid, sixtpsjxcrecorded ini;fator of Mr iffltiii ,f "'' VjV %' : -'-- •■•ji •■■"'■'■-'< ■!'■' ■■■-■ ■■

Gladstone, 22j Msmriveviltc; 67; Tenui, 43; Alfrecltdn, 7. The .figures we have quoted tend tp show that in tlio Noithirn division the result of the election will in any case be a certainty for Mr Beetham,'. but'tlnit in'the Southern division ihe result is very uncertain. Should, however, four candidates go to the poll, the chances are that Mr Bunny will be returned.
