THE LATE EXPLOSION. Simpson, fireman on board the hulk Woodlark, charged with fastening down the safety valve of a boiler and thereby causing an explosion, was yesterday acquitted, the evidence as to the wedge being tightly driven being weak. Dunedin, Masaey, the Town Clerk, has resigned, pending investigation of the charge made against him of conspiring to commit arson, suoli charge being the basis of a libel aetion, in which the jury virtually held that the accusation was not libellous.
