To Messrs C. A, Vallance, David Picker ing, W. H. Hosking, George Fanuin, J, Williams, and the other Gentlemen signing the requisition:— GENTLEMEN.-In answer to tin very large requisition you have presented me with I feel extremely pleased villi the honor you have done me and confidence you have displayed in me, especially as it was unsought for and unexpected on my part. A? the requisition represents so very large and influential a section of the Burgesses of Masterton I have much pleasure in acceding to it, and if elected I promise to do my duty to the best of my ability without fear or favor, and to work in unison with the Councillors for the good of the whole Borough and to conduct the deliberations of the Council with propriety, '".zz^ My personal views we well known to a large number of the requitionists, but now state for the information of other ratepayers that they arc emphatically PitoortES-uvE and at the same time hiee hiom recklessness. It will bo my aim to assist in fostering such measures is will promote the substantial welfare and advancement of tho Borough so as to enable it to attain the position its natural advantages warrants. At the same time I will eonsider it my duty to counsel the ratepayers against unmatured schemes for reckless borrowing and expenditure, and will use my best endeavors to protect the Burgesses from being weighted down with excessive and burdensome rates. In conclusion. I wish to explain my reasons for not having taken part in local matters ere this, are that although having large interests in the Borough, I have not till now had leisure time at my disposal, and partly from not wishing to push myself forward to the exclusion of other gontlcmen who had prior claims on the suffrages of the Burgesses, I am, Gentlemen, Your obedient servant, M, CASELBERG.
