At the requisition represents so very large and influential a section of the Burgesses of Maßterton I have much pleasuro in acceding to it, and if elected I promise to do my duty to the best, of my ability without fear o>' favor, and to work in unistn with the Councillors for tbo good of the whole Borough and to conduct the deliberations of the Council with propriety. My personal views are well known to a large number of the requitioriists, but now state for the information of other ratepayers that they arc emphatically progressive and at the same time free from recklessness, It will be my aim to assist in fostering such measures is will promote the substantial welfare and advancement of the Borough so as to enable it to attain the position its patural advantages warrants. At the same time I will consider it my duty to counsel the ratepayers against unmatured schemes for reckless borrowing and expenditure, and will use my best endeavors to protect the Burgesses from being weighted down with excessive and burdensome rates, In conclusion. I wish to explain my reasons for not having taken part in local matters ere this, are that although having largo in the Horough, I have not till now had leisure time at my disposal, and partly from not wishing to push myself forward to'tha'exclusion of other gontlcmen who had prior claims on the suffrages of the Burgesses.
