THE BENEVOLENT CZAR.
Much has been said and written in reference to whether or not the assassins of the Czar were tortured to force a confession from them as to their organize tion. The oorr'esp'ondent 'of the Naradowa now asserts 1 positively' thai they were tortured in the' flame manner as all those who attempted' to take the life of the Czar before them. Karakasoff, who fired at the Czar in 1864, made confessions under torture 'which led to the detection and discovery of the conspiracy called ".■.■Ad!!'to AiexandeJ at' tempted to make an impression of magnanimity upon Russia and Europe,"and ordered that Karakasoff should be permitted legal counsel and defence. He was informed tljat it would be impossible, because no lawyer could be found Who would dare to undertake to deWdf him. The Czar tljen sent for Couociilor-aiLaw Spazoweiz and demanded that he should defend the assassin. Spazoweiz viaite,d Karakasoff in his cell, but he cquli qqt 1 draw a syllable from, him wh,ioh rnjglyt have been qf assistance in preparing a defence. But the lawyer persisting, Karakasoff finally opened his cqat and pointing to his breatsaid:-»All I can tell js this, and here it is." His breast was burnt to a orlsp orust by the drippings of molten sealing-wax and lead, Spazoweiz returned to the Czar and informed him that after torture hadbsen used a defence was superfluous and imL possible. Alexander did not utter anotliejf word, and dismissed the lawyer. The Jew Goldenberg, another Nihilist and assassin, was also subjeoted to torture, and important secrets were thus forced from him. When the Hebrew congregation to which he belonged demanded his body for interment, they received the answer that the body could not be found, He succumbed to the terrible pain and died. His body was never found,
