THE WELLINGTON MEAT EXPORT COMPANY.

[To the Editor of the"Vtaiharipa Dxilt.] Bowlimds, Sept, 11,1881. Sir, —I feel that the paragraph in your issue of the Bth inst. calls for some notice. The Maiterton shareholders, at the r ' ' ing held on Saturday, the 3rd some sort delegated Mesep Buchraan, Stuckey, and myself to represent their interests, I will ask them to believe that in' bo far as the, Battlement of the Artioleg of Association was concerned, we spared neither time nor pains to protect their interests, in common nvith thou of other shareholders.

The grievance of the complaint—if complaint it bo—seems to be that Masterton shareholders ar» not represented, and I infer from the reference to myself that I am held somewhat blameable for not having accepted office as one of the directors. I will simply say that to attend a meeting of directors in Wellington would involve in winter, if not in summer, an absonce from home of three days, There will be a time when the directors will have to meet at least onoe a week. I felt this to be too great a, oall upon my time when I have so muoh on my own hands to attend to. A year or two hence I may have mora time to give to public businegg—now it is impossible. I felt, therefore, that all we had to do was to assist in securing a thoroughly capable and. trustworthy direotory. I thought that if the delegates of the Maeterton shareholders did this they did their duty; that capable and honest directors, from wheresoever they came, would do_ their duty to all the shareholders alike; that the interest of the shareholders of the Wairarapaat auy rate was an individual interost, and was not affected by their place of residence in the 1 county.

We, the shareholders in the company, are engaged in an enterprise by which ; we hope to benefit ourselves and eause a considerable flow of wealth into the colony. For my part. I looked through tho list of qualified shareholders with a view to ascertain who of them would best conduct.this business, I believe the best were elected, and I trust that experience will cause the Masttrton shareholders to join in this opinion. I am, &0,, Robbut S. Hawkins, [The paragraph te which Mr Hairkins refers was not intended to be » complaint, but simply a reoord of the fact that , a seat in the directory had been offered to a representative of the Maiterton shareholders, from which an inference might be drawn that the claims of this section of the Company had been recognized.
