REPORTED MASSACRE OF TROOPS CONTRADICTED, GARFIELD'S CONDITION. Washington, Sept. 8, The report that the Indians had massacred a large number of American troops is incorrect. They had made prisoner's of General Carr and a detachment, the bulk of whom subsequently escaped, and in their (light eleven were killed; President Garfield, who has been removed to Long Branch, is now showing serious symptoms of fever.
