FOOTBALL.
Cartbkton y. Masterton.
The first match of the season between these two olubs took plaoe at Masterton on Saturday last, Carterton did not lend a full team but were assisted by three Masterton men. The following are the names oi the players representing each townshipCarterton : F. Fairbrother (captain), 0. Fairbrother, Strang, Nix, E. W, pairbrother, J. and H. Oates, RoydhouM, Beer, Campbell, Clifton, Greeks, Bennett,' Beaueh'amp, liters. Masterton . H. Smith, Warden, >. 'Smith, McKeniiie (captain), JF, Smith, Morison, W, Perry, ;W. Harvey, McLachlan, G, Harvey, Alf. Smith, Hounslow, Welch, B. Perry, H. Bannister. On play commencing it was evident that the Masterton men were the strongest and smartest at the game, the Carterton men evidently not having had much , practice, Thii wai their first match this season, and the result could hardly have been other .than it was. During the game Carterton was forced^down'sjgbt .tliijei, and 'Masterton gained sixteen trier Three of these were Carterton on the ground of the ball not having been thrown in: straight. Masterton In each case.allowed
the_ claim .cheerfully and went .to,.work' again to mako it a certainty. 'The tries were gained by A, Smith, 2 ; F. Smith, 1; Morisoa 3 ; Alf, Smith, 1; McKinzie, 2;
maul in-goal, Alf, and A. Smith on the ball when touched down; \V. Perry, 3; W, Harvey, 2; G. Harvey, 1. Of these trie* Monsoh kicked two goals, Perry One, ■the game thus standing three goals ton 'tries to nil. Perry made s good kiok for '*'go»l arid the ball went over, fairly betweenUlie posts, hut a Carterton man sprang up-andtouohedit en route and the goaldid not count. The maul in goal -was of an obstinate character, there being six nn fhl ball 'when carried over "the line. These gradually let go till only Bennett, of Oartertoij, and two Masterton men, were on itfind the ball was'touched down. The Carterton men|pUyed' vriili i pluckthrdiighout arid'some of 'thera with! skill. Bennett, and Beauchamp were particularly notibeable; Greeks was also Very smart, but the Masterton forwards'tfere always on the' ball and iio chance' was given for s Carter-' ton to make a single good run. The passing of the Carterton men was alio very wild and their scrimmages, were not well packed, enabling their opponents'to'.force themselves right, through. \ These defects are simply through want of practice and will probably.be.so.on. remedied. On the other Bide the running and passing of the Masterton men were quite a feature in the game, W. Perry, VVardell, McKenzie', F. Smith, and Morison doing good service by their fleetneas and skill in evading would; be cellarers. The passing was unusally smart, the team working well together. On conclusion of the game cheers r were given and responded to, and a scratoh organised ts finish up the day. Mr Leahy, of the anatomical boot warehouse, has intimated to us that he will give a silver cup for the winning team of two out of three matohes between these two, clubs. Mr F. W. Green'will also give a cup, but has not jet decided of what nature it shall be. This should 'be some inducement for more practice either side.
The return match, Greytown v Masterton, will be played in Mastieitonon Saturday next,
