The Wairarapa Daily. FRIDAY, AUGUST 26, 1881.

_* It is admitted by both sides of the House that the proposed redistribution of seats will be carried in some form or other during the present session, but we must not look for the general election this side of Christinas. Apparently it wfl} be the end of September or the beginning 4 October before the Government, in the faceajfthje Opposition manifested by stonewalled,'gefs through the work which it deems absolutely necessary for the Hpnse to accomplish. And then with the newly divided electorates, fresh rolls will have to be made out and printed, an undertaking which will involve considerable delay. The present rolls will be utterly useless as a basis for new ones. Opportunities ftpt necessarily be given to the settlers in t|te colony to register again in accordance with .the new state of their electoral districts. > We regard somewhat with a feeling of dismay the probable result of the division of the present Wairarapa electoral district. On former occasions there has been confusion, but this time it wiljl be confusion worse confounded. In the southern division of the Wairarapa Messrs Bunny, Boys, Buchanan, and Pharazvn are pledged to some for-i ward; one and all of them being supporters of the Hall Ministry, It is very evident that with votes split into four sections on the Government side, the Opposition by putting one man in the field can carry the day. The Opposition is in a small minority in the southern .division, hut if it can only depend upon 25 p«r cent of the voting power, and we think it can jdo this, it can cany off the election, The four! gentlemen who have come forward naturally deem their own personal interests as paramount to those of the party which they are supposed to represent. We trust, however, the electors themselves will open their eyes to the situation and take measures to prevent, say, twfl thirds of the electorate being out-voted by one third. There should be. some organization of the supporters ■of the Hall Ministry in the Wairarapa with a view to select a candidate from the; four on the Government side. Personal feelings should be put on one; side, and ; the candidate who stood the best chance should be adopted by the parly, It will be remembered that at theilast election the Grey party worked a dodge in the tower Valley very quietly and skilfully, and i» the coming ope! they will, if they have the opportunity, do the same, Their agents have already been through this district for | the' purpose of making up, as it were,'.'a little game." They cannot, it is well known, carry off both of the Wairarapa seats,' but there is every 'probability of their getting hold of one ■of them. Surely with an absolute majority pf settjers in all parts .of .the

district favorable to the continuance in offico of the present Ministry an effort shonld be made to prevent the Opposi-tion-winning through the disorganized state, tjf the Gcyernnieut party. -5- $.-,

. The fourth of a series of entertainments in aid of the Carterton Library Fund was given in the Institute, Carterton, on Wednesday evening last, under the chairmanship of Mr R. Fairbrothjr, The room was filled with an appreciative audience. The entertainment opened with about 20 children from the Public School singing "The Song of the Bee," which, together with three rounds sung later in the .evening, were rendered in a very creditable manner. Top much prajso cannot be bestowed upon Mrs Palmer (who conducted) for the way in which she had fought the children to sing so effectively, and also for the invaluable help she has given to these entertainments. Mr Keyworth followed with a song, in character, "Jack's Yarn," for which he received an encore, and, in return, sang "The Tar's Farewell." "Nil Despewmduin" and "The Old Sexton," sung by Mr F. G. Moore, were both heartily applauded. Miss Charlotte sang very sweetly K Mother, oh sing me Sleep," Mrs Kibblewhite and' Miss; Minifie following with the duet " Juanita," The former lady also sang •'Thy Voice is Near" fairly, The duet (violin and pianoforte) " Somnarabula," given by Herr Lundqvist and Mr L, Wilsone, showed that both gentlemen were possessed of more than ordinary talent. Miss Bessie Palmer, a little girl, sang exceedingly well " The Child's Song." For Miss and Master's Bathbone's pianoforte duet they received wellmerited applause. Mr Keyworth gave a: recitation, which caijsed much laughter. "The Midshipmite," sung by Mr Todd, received an encore, and in response he gave "The British Lion," The most enjoyable event of the evening was a recitation by Mr F. G, Moore, "The Bishop of liura-te-foo," which provoked much merriment, and which ho illustrated by caricatures on canvas. Mrs and.Mjss Palmer, Mrs Williams, and Mr L.
