The Wairarapa Daily. THURSDAY, AUGUST 18, 1881.

Four burgesses -have been named as likely to come forward for the Mayoralty of Masterton, three of whom have some personal claims for the distinction, and may be admitted to be fairly capable of discharging the duties of the office to the satisfaction of the public. Probably one or two more candidates may yet coine to the front; at all events the list cannot be considered closed, and as yet it is a little premature to analyse the special qualifications of each aspirant. It is understood that Mr Ren ill will not seek re-election; He has, on the whole, presided over the Council during his term of office with greater success than we at one time anticipated, and in spite of wide differences of opinion on many important questions, a very cordial feeling has existed between him and the Council. No citizen vho has borne the burthen of Mayoralty in Masterton for a twelvemonth has as yet sought re-election, and we are not at all surprised to find that Mr Renau,, like his pressors, is satisfied with a single innings, It is satisfactory, however, to find that tjje office, though not sufficiently attractive for any holder of it to dpsire the occupancy of it for a second term, yet sought after by more than one candidate for a first ■ one. We we shall welcome the apperance of several competitors for the civic chair in the hope that one or more of them will give us a .programme, We are comparatively indifferent whether Mr Casemserg, Mr Gappek, or Mr Vity; presides over the town during the coming municipal term. We are quite satisfied .that tjiey one and all. make good Mayors, What Ve really. would iike to know would be t|n; ■ programme of each candidate who; seeks the honor. We have in Masterton been moving forward rather slowly .doping the last few years, and we think that the timje J)Q.s come to stop out a little. We ourselves sbo.vtl(J decidedlv favor that candidate whose views were the more progressive—with, of course, a proviso that they were neither extravagant nor impracticable. It may .be jaid that the strong point of the presenib May/jr of Masterton and his predecessor has been ecQn.oijjical administration,. While we are quite alive to the advantage of having our municipal affairs fairly well administered, there pyo .other considerations which occasionally require t.q he weighed, We expect the elected head of the town to lead public opinion in effecting any general improvements the ratepayers desire, There is now a greater demand for public works in the Borough than the Council can supply out of its ordinary revenue, The rate, payers have a right to know how far their requirements are likely to be met., and therefore wp Jook forward to the coming Mayoraj contest in fjje expectation of ft programme fron]i gqnje candidate which will meet what we' believe to be the reasonable wishes of the burgesses. The fact that nearly one hundred burgepses recently signed a njemorial praying for the abolition of the boKQcigh is significant to prove that a certain amount of dissatisfaction does exist, We have no sympathy with the petition itself, and hope to see 'the municipal institutions in this town flourish rather than die out It is no easy matter for a town with ;t population of little more than two thousand souls ty furnish an unexceptionable contingent of nine citizens to conduct its affairs, Wo have no reason to believe that in general ability the public men of this town are behind those of other towns of a similar size, and we trust to see theiu equally enterprising. We think the time has arrived when a call may lie made oh one qs ipore of them to lead in the direction of completing the unfinished works scattered about tie Borough. To our mind the candidate of the ap : proaching Mayoral contest with the best programme of works for the coming year will be the one most deserving of the suffrages of the burgesses, At the late Council meet-, ing Mr Eunalii and Mr Oapper made rather unwarrantable attacks on the Press. With respect tp tfye former gentleman, nothing that lie says does is a surprise to us; but we confess to a feeling of disappoint n)«i4 Or Gapper should have acoused the Press of all round misrepresentation without producing a particle of evidence to prove his statement. If Mr Gapper follows jfche example of Mr Renali, he may, perhaps, fyy advances to needy printers, secure newspaper criticism congenial to his soul, though possibly slightly baneful to his pocket. We. did, however, think that Mr Gapber had seaso enough to see that a thoroughly independent press was in the Jong run the best friend of any

public man who; had any real wenr'aiid f tear m him. If Mr Gapi'EH does not care tor independent -jdui'niilism, let him, like Mr. Jlbnall, become tlip proud .proprietor of a newspaper plant of-his own. Occasionally it is the duty of tlio Press—not the hired press, but the independent one—to say linrd things of Councillors j but Councillors themselves say far, harder things of each other, and in much coarser language. : :■ I ■
